Gumeracha - 1839-1939
The Sandercock Family
Miss Tuck's School
Below is an extract from 'A History Of Gumeracha and District, South Australia, 1839-1939' - published in 1939 for the centenary of Gumerach. It is the section specific to the Sandercock family. It contains a number of historical errors, based on verbal family history. Mr. Stanbury is now known to have a first name of William, and it is unlikely that he brought sheep from Van Diemen's Land - he was a 'ticket of leave' convict, which would have most likely been hidden from Richard and Elizabeth Sandercock's children. (Until recently, many Australian's denied their convict ancestry). The Kenton Valley properties are no longer in the possession of the Sandercock family.

Mr. Stanbury (christian name now unknown) came to Kenton Valley from Van Diemen’s Land with sheep for the South Australian Company, and reached there in 1837 or 1838. Settling outside the “special survey area”, he built a wattle and daub hut with a thatch roof, and sent to England for his daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Richard Sandercock. They arrived in South Australia in 1841, and took up their residence in the thatched cottage.
They had ten children, Richard, Samuel, Thomas, William, and john (sons), and Mary (Mrs. Gregory), Louisa (Mrs. Bowey), Emily (Mrs. Cossey), and Elizabeth and Sarah (unmarried).
The eldest son of these pioneers is able to count seven generations of Australians, which is perhaps a State record! In 1936, South Australia’s Centenary, it was stated that only two or three families were able to trace six generations.
The Sandercock family line is as follows : - 1. Stanbury, 1837-1838. 2. Elizabeth Sandercock - daughter. 3. Samuel Sandercock - grandson. 4. J. Edward Sandercock - great-grandson. 5. Ivy Sandercock (Mills) - great-great-granddaughter. 6. Joyce Mills (Jacobi) - great-great-great-granddaughter. 7. Coral Jacobi - great-great-great-great-granddaughter.
The descendants of another of the sons, John, the youngest, are able to trace six generations, and the original property first occupied by Mr. Stansbury has remained in the possession of this family.
