GUMERACHA DIGGERS BALL. An outstanding event was the 34th Annual Diggers' Ball sponsored by the Gumeracha Sub-Branch of the RSL. This fixture is now the longest standing function to be held annually in Gumeracha and the enthusiastic support given it by the Committee and their helpers ensures its continued success.
More than 250 people crowded the Gumeracha Town Hall and danced to the enjoyable music of Mrs Walter's orchestra with Mr Eric Jamieson as Master of Ceremonies.
The Hall decorations were again outstanding, The new style of decorating completely with flags and bunting which was introduced by a former President, Mr Nash, now living at Kangaroo Island, was successfully continued.
A large portrait of Her Majesty the Queen centrally mounted, dominated the stage decorations and strips of red, white, and blue bunting formed a background while an illuminated coat of arms completed the picture. Coloured festoon lighting added to the effect of the main Hall where another coat of arms was mounted on the balcony and large coloured drapes were hung on each window. The 9 p.m. ceremony in memory of Fallen Comrades was again most impressively carried out. All lights were switched off, and after a few seconds of darkness a spotlight picked out a white cross on a dark background on one side of the stave, whilst the President, Mr M. Roden, recited the Ode. This was followed by "Lead Kindly Light," "The Last Post" and "Reveille."
The usual novelties were part of the programme and dancers enjoyed a delicious savoury and poultry supper given by the residents of the district and prepared by Mrs R.H. Bell and her team of helpers. Special thanks are due to RSL members who helped to make the ball a success and also to Mesdames R. Sandercock, M. Roden, J. Spinkston, R. Amber, and F. Dohnt. [26/5/1954 8c.]

TORRENS VALLEY ASSOC. To the accompaniment of glorious sunshine tempered by a slight breeze the 'A' grade series of the TVFA 1952 season opened on last Saturday. Most teams generally expressed themselves as being much below full strength and are looking forward to establishing early winning points to stand them in good stead when the final four is being resolved later in the season. Early indications, based on last Saturday's results, make it appear that Williamstown is fielding a team of a higher standard than of the past two years, and that Houghton may further slip down the ladder before once again becoming the force which took final honours several seasons ago. Gumeracha and Lobethal appear to be capable of fielding strong teams again, Birdwood to prove a tough team to defeat, whilst Kersbrook confidently predict they will be well in the running. Mt Pleasant, through having a bye last week, have yet to show their strength. In the 'B' grade section Mt Torrens, newly admitted to the to the TVFA comp. began auspiciously with a fine win over Gumeracha.

'A' GRADE. Gumeracha 12-3 d. Birdwood 10-5. Umpire Mr Roll described the game as the fastest and most spectacular ever which he had officiated for a long time. Best Players:- Gumeracha: B. Moore (best on ground), K. Sandercock, R. Stanbury, K. Hanna, W. Hannaford, Jim O'Dea. Birdwood: M. Tredrea, L. Loechel, M. Lenger, R. Shipp, M. Taylor, k. Stoodley.
Goalkickers:- Gumeracha: K. Sandercock 7, B. Moore 3, R. Fuller, M. Symonds. Birdwood: Stoodley 4, M. Lenger 2, M. Taylor 2, Loechel, Dawson. Williamstown 7-9 d. Houghton 2-4.
Best Players for Houghton: I. Dicker, L. Adams, A. Ross, K. Harvey.
Goalkickers: I. Dicker 4, K. Harvey, L. Adams. Lobethal 19-9 d. Kersbrook 8-16.
Neither team displayed a great deal of cohesive football and both will have to improve their play before being considered as premiership contenders. [8/5/1952 5d-f.]

GUMERACHA WINS 'A' GRADE GRAND FINAL. At the Birdwood oval on Saturday, the Premiership of the Torrens Valley Cricket Association was decided when Gumeracha dismissed Lobethal for 106 and at the end of the day had lost only one wicket for 126 runs.
Main scorers for Lobethal were captain K. Oborn with 39 and R. King 35. H. Clutterbuck 4/13 and K. Sandercock 3/22 were main wicket takers for Gumeracha. Main scorers for Gumeracha were G. Cornish 48 and K. Symonds 45 not out. This is the third year in succession that Gumeracha has won the premiership. [28/3/1956 7c.]

TORRENS VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION. Pre-Season Round-Up. This season with three grades, A1, A2, and B grade, the competition could be exceptionally interesting. There are six teams in each grade. Last season’s premiers, Lobethal, are in high hopes of winning their second premiership. With the return of Ivor Zilm and the possible chance of getting Bill Armour, their side will be as strong as last season’s. Ron Stanbury and Les Schapel were again selected as captains of their side for this coming season.
Cudlee Creek, the most brilliant batting side in the competition last season, will again field a strong side. Eric Phillips, who had the bad luck to break his leg during the football season, hopes to play after a few matches.
Birdwood, second at the end of the minor round last season, will have the misfortune to lose the three Mueller boys half way through the season. This will greatly reduce their strength, however, they will still have class batsmen in Dick Klose and Jim Kain. Their bowlers, especially the pace attack, will be very weak.
Lenswood, always a steady side, has been improving during the last couple seasons and if their younger players, such as Don Morriss and Bill Joyce, come along as hoped they could figure prominently in the finish.
Charleston, with very little talent offering outside of the bowling twins-Bill Turner and Syd Sickerdick-could find the going fairly difficult. Their batting line-up is weak and usually if Bill Turner doesn’t get them, they don’t get many.
Gumeracha, out of the four last season, the first time for many years, will be trying to regain ground and put their name once more on the Shield. They have, however, a side which is lacking in all-round strength. Ken Hanna, the Association’s most prolific rungetter, and King Sandercock, with his spinners, are asked to do too much during the season. They will need more assistance from the other players to figure in the finish-and they can.
In A2, Mount Torrens with stars like Merv. Kowald and Howard Lenger, will be hard to toss. Their strength dies a little after these two. They are very confident of winning this title.
Mount Pleasant, with Tom Bascombe as their big gun, could surprise and Springton and Forest Range could also make the going very tough. Kersbrook and Lobethal complete the grade, but they should be too weak to offer any stiff opposition.
The B grade competition is wide open with Gumeracha, Mt Pleasant and Eden Valley likely to fight out the finish.
Trophies for the best batsman, bowler, and fieldsman will be given at the conclusion of the season. For batting the winner could come from Ken Hanna, Ron Phillips, Jim Kain, Bill Turner or the Lobethal team’s Ken Oborn or Trev. Graeber in A1. A2-Merv. Kowald will be hard to toss, with main opposition from Errol Herbig, Len Norton or Tom Bascombe.
In B grade, it is very open and Eden Valley could shine. With the ball Bill Turner is an early fancy, with team mate Syd Sickerdick close and Dick Klose, Kev Silva and "Footy" Conlon will be in it.
A2 could see Howard Lenger or Tom Bascombe, with Ross Dearman close to the title. [2/10/1957 10c.]

R. SCHLEIN HEADS CUDLEE CREEK RECOVERY. Mt Torrens In Danger Of Losing First Match. For the opening of the third series the bowlers held the upper hand, with Cudlee Creek, 153, making the highest score.
At Mount Torrens-Mt Torrens 82 (M. Klose 44, G. Klose 11, R. Klose 6/41, B. Mueller 2/25) v. Birdwood 1/9 (B. Kappe 1/2).
A 44 from opener, Murray Klose, saved Mt Torrens from a complete rout. After losing their first wicket for one run, he and Kowald carried the score to 30 before Kowald was run out. R. Klose with 6/41 dumbfounded the latter batsmen with flight and spin.
B. Mueller bowled right through the innings for 2/25/ Kappe's early wicket has given the Mounts an outside chance.
At Gumeracha-Gumeracha 108 (B. Symonds 42, K. Sandercock 18, S. Sickerdick 3/21, W. Turner 6/36), v. Charleston 0/7.
Gumeracha lost three early wickets, but a 69 stand between Symonds and Sandercock allowed a momentary recovery. The spinning "twins" again secured the wickets.
At Cudlee Creek-Cudlee Creek 153 (R. Schlein 76, E. Newman 35, K. Phillips 29, W. Armour 4/28, C. Suffolk 2/33, E. Smedley 2/36) v. Lobethal.
Cudlee Creek again scored the most runs in the competition, due to a 76 from opener R. Schlein.
Lobethal broke through early and secured 5 Cudlee Creek wickets for 45 runs, but a sixth wicket stand of 69 between Schlein and Eric Newman helped. The tail wagged strongly with Ken Phillips hitting everything in sight.
W. Armour bowled impressively to take 4/28 off 13 overs.
A2 GRADE
Both matches in this grade are at an interesting stage, and they could go either way, Rodney Green (Lenswood) top scored with 48 n.o., whilst Maczkowiack (Kersbrook) and Hann (Springton) each took four wickets.
At Lenswood-Lenswood 129 (Rod Green 48 n.o., M. Maczkowiack 4/36, Wilk 2/14, H. Anderson 2/17), v. Kersbrook 2/18 (L. Green 1/1, S. Plummer 1/9). [19/11/1958 9cd.]

BIG WIN TO GUMERACHA. Houghton Defeats Mount Torrens. A convincing win to Gumeracha at Birdwood on Saturday shows every indication that they will go on to take the Torrens Valley Association pennant.
In the B grade semi-final played as a curtain-raiser, Houghton accounted quite comfortably for their main adversary, Mount Torrens.
Although the weather was fine and ideal for football, the ground was in shocking condition and marred good football. The heavy conditions made the going tough for both games, and the B grade match did little to improve the condition of the playing area for the big match.
The old rivals, Gums and Tigers, raised cheers from the big crowd as they raced onto the playing area.
From the bounce Gums were straight into attack, but E. Mason was in the way and turned back the attack. T. Zilm scored a point for Lobethal. Lobethal again attacked but D. Bell saved and kicked out strongly. K. Oborn saved well for the Tigers but Moore and Sandercock missed for points.
Lobethal took over and Bartholomew again put his side into attack, B. Zilm raised one flag. Gums came back strongly, Norsworthy and K. Sandercock goaled and the latter missed from a sitter. Gums were now on top and Sandercock again goaled. Emms and Plummer were battling hard to hold up the attacks and Mason saved repeatedly. Randell was playing good football for Gums, and Symonds had the better of the wing duel. Gumeracha 4-3; Lobethal 0-3.
Silva and K. Schapel were well to the fore for Lobethal, but Grant Cornish and Waller were thorns in the Lobethal attack and often turned them back with good football. B. Zilm's goal brought dismay to his side as he twisted his knee and had to leave the ground.
Gums attacked through K. Hanna and Norsworthy, but Brooks saved and Emms and Mason repeatedly turned them back. K. Oborn was doing a splendid job and Bartholomew and Hanna were having a ding-dong battle at centre, Z. Zilm raised two flags and Sandercock replied. R. Stanbury was playing brilliant football and Bell marked strongly for Gumeracha.
T. Zilm got another six-pointer for the Tigers and Weston (replacing Zilm) added a point. K. Schapel left the play with an injury and Lobethal had both reserves on. Mason repeatedly saved and marked well under trying conditions, whilst G. Dearman and Eckermann were playing strongly.
Cornish and Waller came dashing through, Dicker was battling hard for Gums, and Symonds was knocking out well. Lobethal kept up the attacks and had won the quarter. Gumeracha 5-4; Lobethal 4-6.
Lobethal was quickly into their stride, but could only manage points, while Gums, through Dicker to Tucker raised two flags. Silva was rucking well for Lobethal and K. Oborn was marking brilliantly. Bartholomew often set his team into attack, but the forward area broke down and Cornish, D. Hanna and Waller were often in the way. Emms was brilliant for Lobethal and his efforts on the day were really outstanding. Gums continued the pressure but Graeber goaled for Lobethal and brightened the position. O'Dea, Dicker and Sandercock brought up goals and K. Carter was putting in a strong effort for the Magpies.
Mason and Plummer were kept busy in the back lines, whilst Symonds cleared well for Gums. J. Bell brought up a full pointer. Eckermann was right in the picture for Lobethal and Dearman was turning on a sound game. At the end of the third term Gums held a commanding lead. Gumeracha 11-5; Lobethal 5-6.
From the bounce Eckermann was away, but Bell turned the attack and from Hanna to Cornish and O'Dea raised two flags. Bartholomew and T. Zilm combining well scored a much needed goal for Lobethal. B. Boerth (replacing K. Schapel) was playing well and handling the ball nicely. Plummer saved for Lobethal, also G. Jaensch.
K. Hanna was picking the holes in the Lobethal defence, K. Oborn kicked a nice goal. D. Hanna and Waller for Gums and R. Stanbury and K. Oborn for Lobethal were prominent.
Following Dicker's goal, some clever football from Cornish, Carter and Norsworthy was also true. Gums were now right on top and two quick goals were added by O'Dea and Bell and Sandercock hit the post.
Eckermann and Silva battled in vain. Mason, playing like a champion all day, together with Emms and K. Oborn fought back well, but with the siren Gums proved the better side on the day and finished well in front. Gumeracha 16-10; Lobethal 7-8.
Goalkickers.óGumeracha: K. Sandercock 5, J. O'Dea 3, Norsworthy and Bell 2 each, Dicker, Cornish, Moore, Tucker. Lobethal: T. Zilm 3, B. Zilm, K. Silva, T. Graeber, K. Oborn 1 each.
Best Players.óGumeracha: J. Waller, Grant Cornish, D. Hanna, K. Hanna, G. Tucker, O'Dea. Lobethal: J. Emms, E. Mason, K. Oborn, T. Bartholomew, K. Silva, R. Eckermann.
Lobethal will meet Lenswood next Saturday at Birdwood.[29/8/1956 7bc.]

GUMERACHA WINS TORRENS VALLEY PREMIERSHIP. B GRADE
VICTORY TO HOUGHTON. Gumeracha remained undefeated for the season and won the Torrens Valley premiership on Saturday, defeating the improved Lenswood side. Houghton gained the B grade pennant, defeating Mount Torrens.
Umpire R. Towers had charge of the big match and gave quite a sound exhibition before a crowd which paid £164 at the gate.
From centre Muellerís knock was picked up by J. Bell, but Halliday turned the attack back for Lenswood, but K. Hanna passed to Symonds and Gumeracha were away.
K. Hanna found K. Sandercock, who brought up the first goal.
Brock was in the way for Lenswood. R. Pollard marked, but Symonds put Gums into position and Graeme Cornish to J. Bell was a goal.
Lenswoodís first score was a point and Lyndon Norton came through well, passed to Eric Phillips, but a free to Bell and Gums came back.
J. Bell picked up nicely, but his kick fell short and F. East was in the way and found R. Phillips. D. Bell marked solidly for Gums to save. Caldicottís kick was astray, and Norsworthy cleared. Waters came in for Lenswood and found Caldicott-a point.
Lenswood were now right on top, but bad kicking could only add points to their tally. D. Hanna cleared, but Muller marked and East and Green added points for Lenswood. Waller and D. Hanna were kept busy in the back lines, and D. Bell saved on several occasions, when things looked desperate.
Lenswood really looked good and were playing good wet-weather football. Gumeracha attacked through D. Hanna, Dicker, B. Moore and Tucker for a goal. N. Green replied for Lenswood, followed by another major to S. Plummer.
The scores were even for the first quarter with Lenswood having most of the play, but not being able to gain the advantage through poor kicking.
GUMERACHA 3-0, LENSWOOD 2-6. Grant Cornish attacked for Gums, but Giles marked. Graeme Cornish cleared as did Patterson and play see-sawed until J. Bell came out of the pack to snap a single for Gums. OíDea marked the kick-inóanother point. Tucker also brought up one flag. Graeme Cornish found K. Sandercock and a nice shot was a goal.
E. Phillips shot to L. Norton to D. Green, but Waller returned to Symonds. Grant Cornish found Sandercock, who again made no mistake.
Gumeracha were now playing better football and settling down well to the wet conditions. B. Moore to K. Sandercock and this player was in deadly form and notched another six-pointer.
Giles kick was off the target and D. Hanna cleared well. R. Phillips marked and put P. Caldicott in position to goal for Lenswood. Tucker snapped a classy goal over his head. Muller cleared to S. Plummer, but D. Bell marking splendidly passed to Graeme Cornish and ultimately Sandercock flashed through another goal.
Lenswood took up the offensive, but J. bell turned out the attack and kicked into the forward line, where Tregenza saved.
K. Sandercock missed a sitter from right in front.
GUMERACHA 8-5, LENSWOOD 3-6. Muller drove forward twice, but Grant Cornish saved well. East put Giles in position, J. bell held them up and Muller pulled down a beauty.
K. Hanna was getting the better of the centre duel and Patterson was holding soundly for Lenswood. Giles was strong on the ball and passed to Conlon, who found Caldicott to bring up another goal for Lenswood.
Grant Cornish and Symonds combined to put Sandercock in possession for a fullpointer.
Muller, Giles and East surged forward, but Waller again brilliant in defence, cleared.
Lenswood battled to score and D. Green passed to R. Phillips, but only a single.
From a scrimmage in goal front D. Green added a single, and R. Phillips missed from kicking range. Lenswood missed golden opportunities to score in this quarter-their play was very ragged and kicking lacked direction. Gumeracha on the other hand were playing sound football and not giving their opponents a chance to get set. D. bell and Grant Cornish were sound in defence.
Gumeracha took over the attack and with a series of good play from B. Moore, Graeme Cornish, Dicker and Tucker.
OíDea marked and K. Carter flashed through and added a six-pointer for Gums. E. Phillips put Lenswood into attack through L. Norton, but J. bell saved and with another burst of good football, Sandercock goaled again.
Muller to D. Green from centre and J. Schapel kicked the goal of the day with a lovely kick off the wing.
GUMERACHA 11-6, LENSWOOD 5-8. Gumeracha attacked, Patterson saved well and Brock was playing a grand game. Dicker scored a point. Giles was still battling grimly, but B. Moore put Gums back into play and Dicker snapped another point.
Sandercock picked up a nice mark and finished it off with a goal from an almost impossible angle. From centre Waters was freed, but Dicker returned the kick, and Patterson kicked it back. Dicker marked and passed to OíDea and Sandercock brought up one flag from a snap shot. Randell saved the position when Lenswood looked like going on to score.
Gumeracha now had the game well in hand and some of the spectators, satisfied the play was all over, began to leave the ground, but Lenswood continued to attack strongly.
Muller was still playing well, but Gums were now holding a commanding lead and pressed on to victory. B. Moore brought up another six-pointer for Gums and Lenswood again attacked. Phillips to J. Schapel and R. Phillips, but his kick was off the side of the boot and OíDea cleared.
Patterson, D. Green, K. Green, J. Schapel and Conlon attacked again, but Gumsí backs were too solid. B. Moore again goaled for Gumeracha.
Lenswood, though beaten, was far from disgraced and put up a remarkable fight on a day spoilt by rain and mud.

INTER-PREMIERSHIP FOOTBALL. Gumeracha Remains Undefeated. On Saturday, Gumeracha the premiership side in the Torrens Valley Football Association met the premiers of the Gawler and District League (Salisbury) at Birdwood. In perfect weather conditions a large crowd attended and was treated to an excellent game of football.
Only points separated the teams throughout the match, and brilliant high marking and strong ruck work by Salisbury was only matched by Gums with clever roving and flashes of brilliant football.
Umpire Taylor had charge of the game and gave a splendid exhibition.

TVFA. BIRDWOOD IN GOOD FINALS TRIAL. Birdwood before a good crowd, earned the right to meet Lobethal in the second semi-final in a fortnightës time, by their twenty-point victory over the Magpies at Gumeracha.
GRADE A1. Birdwood 14-15, Gumeracha 12-7. Birdwood was first to score with goals from B. Mueller and Kowald. The play was vigorous and Gumeracha found it hard to get the ball past Birdwoodës halfback line.
From a charity free to Jack OëDea, Gumeracha posted their first score. Tucker added one seconds later. Gumeracha rovers were now picking up V. Muellerës knocks. R. Klose for Birdwood and G. Cornish (Gum) added goals just before the bell. R. Klose goaled minutes after the second quarter began, but Sandercock (2) and Jim OëDea added 3 quickly for Gums. Excellent handball resulted in Stoodley scoring for Birdwood, but Tucker replied for
Gums soon after, following a great piece of system. Two goals to Tucker and one each to R. Klose and V. Mueller kept the game close at half time.
Minutes after half time M. Lenger soccered one through to leave Birdwood 1 point down. A terrific midfield struggle then began with both halfback lines holding firm. J. Lange, at centre, who had been totally eclipsed in first half, was now in everything for Birdwood.
The large crowd was really enjoying everything of this thrill-packed match. John Bell, Gumeracha captain, left the field during this quarter.
High marking and good handball were features of the game. The only fault was too many punt kicks for a dry day.
The last term began with Maloney scoring for Birdwood. Kowald marked magnificently to find form and Birdwood forged ahead. Gumeracha relieved the pressure with good play resulting in goals to Moore and Tucker, but B. Mueller replied for Birdwood. Kowald was outstanding in this term.

GUMERACHA WINS PREMIERSHIP BY BIG MARGIN. Grade A2. Loser Failed to Score. The grand finals of Torrens Valley Football Association played at Birdwood on Saturday produced surprises and probably a record. It was not anticipated that the winning margin would be so great in Grade A1 and it is difficult to believe that one team failed to score in the Grade A2 match.
A record crowd (gate takings £214) saw Gumeracha thrash their old rivals, Lobethal, by 78 points, whilst in Grade A2 Kersbrook kicked 14-14 and Mount Torrens could not even register a minor score.
Gums raced into the ground led by their little mascot and looked a strong eighteen.
The weather had cleared when Lobethal, led by Trev. Bartholomew, raced onto the oval. They were minus several of their regular players, owing to injuries and sickness.
Umpire Burns had charge of the game.
Silva took the knock and Stanbury kicked into the forward zone, but Norsworthy intercepted. Jaensch passed to D. Newman, but his kick was astray and Bell saved. Lobethal was attacking and Waller was kept busy turning back attacks. Fuller raised one flag. mason, Silva and R. Stanbury combined, but Carter broke up the attack.
Symonds cleared from the wing and jaensch marked well to put Lobethal back into play. B. Zilmës long kick was collected by Grant Cornish, but Johnny Mills marked well and passed to Silva for two flags. Bell was freed at centre, but again Jaensch held up the attack. Norsworthy flashed through and B. Moore found Tucker for a goal.
From a penalty B. Moore passed to Tucker for one flag. A long kick from Mason found R. Newman and from Stanbury to Mills still a point. Grant Cornish was playing strongly and R. Stanbury was playing good football for the Tigers. Bellës kick was beautifully marked by Silva, his pass found Bartholomew, who goaled.
R. Stanbury marked but D. Hanna cleared to Graham Cornish and Jaensch again turned the attack. Clever football from K. Hanna put Fuller in positionóone point.
Rain began to fall again and from some very fast, clever football B. Moore brought up a full pointer for Gums. Lobethal 2-1, Gums 1-5.
R. Stanbury put Lobethal into attack from centre and Schubert passed to Bartholomew, but Waller again cleared and Gums, back into attack, Phillips flashed into the play and M. Plummer saved on the goal line. Cornish was freed and passed to Moore for one flag. B. Zilm marked strongly and Stanbury snapped a point. Zilm cleared for the Tigers and Mills played on, but Norsworthy was very strong in defence.
Eckermann was now under notice for strong defence work and his move ended in a point, then Stanbury hit the post and Silva added a single from a long shot.
Dicker goaled for Gums, and Plummer put Jaensch in position. Graeber marked, but J. Bellës goal put Gums further ahead. Rain was still falling heavily and Gums were now attacking strongly with B. Zilm saving repeatedly for Lobethal. Cornish was playing great football for Gumeracha.
Lobethal came through and Smedley flashed in, but Norsworthy again saved on the goal line. Sandercock was often under notice and put Fuller into position to goal.
Gums 4-8, Lobethal 2-5.
Players took the field for the third term with rain pouring down. B. Zilm cleared to Silva, and Lobethal were into attack, only to find stonewall Waller in the way. Play was now a bit congested and the ball was out of bounds quite often.
Norsworthy goaled for Gumeracha. Cornish took control from centre, but Paech cleared to C. Newman and D. Bell saved. The kick-off was marked by D. Newman, but D. Bell again marked to relieve the pressure. Graeber marked and kicked into goal, where Mills snapped a point. At the other end it was a point to Gumeracha. Jaensch, solid all day, cleared, but Bell suckered a goal through in the mud.
Dearman was freed and from a scramble in goal front Mills snapped a goal. Eckermann, playing at his best often held up dangerous Gums attacks. Bell added a point and Tuckerës kick found Moore who added a goal. Lobethal was not enjoying the wet conditions and were finding it difficult to match the pace of the Magpies. Mason saved for Lobethal. B. Zilm marked but his kick was off the target. Eckermann was brilliant on the flank and passed again to Zilm, but Carter broke up the attack. Graeber gained possession, but Norsworthy shot a point. Gums played all over their opponents, with fast, clever, systematic football, marking the ball well and playing good position.
Bartholomew for the Tigers and Peach were battling on gamely. Gums 8-11, Lobethal 3-7.
The Stanbury boys got a point when Graeber marked, only to see Waller take over and kick to Dicker and R. Stanbury to again score.
Schubert to Bartholomew up field, but Waller was safe. Plummer saved again for Lobethal and kicked to Graeber, but Gumeracha sensing victory put everything into attack and Lobethal had their backs to the wall.
Dicker kicked another goal and D. Newman saved well to find Eckermann, but Phillips took charge and Tucker kicked safely.
Two more goals and a series of points to Gumeracha and the people began to leave.
Gumeracha had the game well won and playing on strongly, added goals at will. Lobethal, a tired, defeated team, went down to a better team on the day. Gums 14-20, Lobethal 3-8.
Goal-kickers: Gumeracha, Tucker, Fuller, Bell each 3, Dicker, Moore each 2, Norsworthy 1. Lobethal, Silva, Paech, Bartholomew.
Best players: Gumeracha, Waller, Graham Cornish, J. Bell, Norsworthy, Dicker,
Moore. Lobethal: Jaensch, Eckermann, R. Stanbury, Bartholomew, Paech, Schubert. [18/9/1957 11a-c.]

TVCA - CUDLEE CREEK OPEN WELL AGAINST LOBETHAL. In the opening round of Torrens Valley District matches, Cudlee Creek began well by scoring 224 runs in 150 minutes against Lobethal on the fast Chain of Ponds oval.
Springton collapsed against Gumeracha, who may be troubled to score the required 17 runs to win.
Birdwood recovered well from 8/54 to score 135 against Mount Torrens, at Mt Torrens.
Springton batted after winning the toss against Gumeracha, but collapsed for only 67 runs in their first innings. Medium pace bowlers Ray Gallas and Ron Coleman took seven wickets between them. Only Erol Herbig and Tommy Woolford made anything resembling scores. Gumeracha at stumps still trail by 17 runs, and as their side is not over strong this week, could still find it difficult to win. Scores: Springton 67 (E. Herbig 17, T. Woolford 17; R. Coleman 4/9, R. Gallas 3/22) v. Gumeracha 4/50 (R. Winkler 17, K. Sandercock 11 n.o., N. Sinkinson 2 n.o.; M. Kemp 2/26). [21/10/1959 8d-f.]

HIGH AND LOW SCORES IN FIRST TVCA SERIES. Cricket opened in the Torrens Valley Association on Saturday in fine warm weather. Form displayed was indifferent.
Most teams had difficulty in mustering the required number of players for this first series.
Torrens Valley Historical Journal No. 76 137 At Springton.-Springton batted nearly all day to score 189. Ron Winkler and Dennis Gray captured early wickets, but with good innings by the Kempe brothers and L. Shearer (capt.), Springton eventually compiled a very formidable score on this fast ground. Scores: Springton 189 (L. Shearer 56 n.o., S. Kempe 49; R. Winkler 4/54, K. Sandercock 2/30, D. Gray 2/26, L. Green 2/31) v. Gumeracha 0/6. Ö [19/10/1960 9fh.].

WILL BE CLOSE BATTLE FOR FINAL FOUR. With only two matches remaining after the completion of the current series, teams are locked in an even battle for positions in the final four of the Torrens Valley Cricket Association.
Premiership points at present are as follows: Mt Torrens 36, Lobethal 30, Lenswood 30, Springton 24, Cudlee Creek 24, Mt Pleasant 18, Gumeracha 18, Murdoch Hill 12, Birdwood 6, Charleston nil.
The improved Birdwood team could make the competition even keener between the higher teams if they score an outright win against Charleston. This win would give them 18 points.
New Oval Used-Lobethal oval was opened for play on Saturday after being closed for two seasons. The arena was cut with motor mowers and was in excellent condition.
Stronger Birdwood Set For Points-Charleston, batting first, were dismissed for 45 runs after 90 minutes of play on Saturday. Birdwood bowlers B. and V. Mueller, took all the nine wickets between them.
Birdwood opened well when R. Schwarz and R. Klose put on 33 in the opening partnership. At stumps the side was 4/110-65 runs ahead of Charleston's total.
Charleston are in a poor position and will have to improve if they are to stave off outright defeat.
Scores: Charleston 45 (R. Newman 20; B. Mueller 5/23, V. Mueller 4/20) v. Birdwood 4/110 (B. Mueller 30 n.o., R. Schwarz 29, R. Klose 21; W. Turner 3/18).
Kowald and Herrmann Score Well for Mt Torrens-After losing an early wicket, two Mt Torrens batsmen-M. Kowald and L. Herrmann-both batted impressively to score 58 and 53 respectively. M. Kowald and M. Lenger added 80 runs for the second wicket partnership. From 3/91 L. Herrmann and his brother, K. Herrmann, took the tally to 140.
R. Winkler (Gumeracha) took the bowling honours with 3/47.
Scores: Mt Torrens, 6/195 (M. Kowald 58, L. Herrmann 53, M. Lenger 27, K. Herrmann 20; R. Winkler 3/47, K. Sandercock 2/49).
Lenswood Fight Back In Last 10 Min.-Lenswood (usually a high-scoring side), after being dismissed for the mediocre score of 129 by the Cudlee Creek bowlers, fought back in the last ten minutes of play by taking two Cudlee Creek wickets for seven runs. Five runs of this score were byes.
Fast bowler Don Morriss was in top form and took 2/0.
Batting first, Lenswood were in trouble early when they lost three wickets for 36. Two 30-run partnerships raised the tally, but the Creeks' medium pace bowlers held the score down and when the seventh wicket fell they dismissed the remainder for only 11 runs.
Scores: Lenswood 129 (N. Beauchamp 51, G. Schultz 27; K. Phillips 3/50, T. Nobes 2/18, L. Nobes 2/21, E. Phillips 2/23) v. Cudlee Creek 2/7 (D. Morriss 2/0). [11/1/1961 9a-c.]

TVCA - GRAND CENTURY TO SCHWARZ (BIRDWOOD). Birdwood scored well to be in a commanding position against Charleston, while Mt Torrens, with all wickets in hand, need only 82 runs for a win over Springton. Birdwood's opening batsman, Bob Schwarz, played a major role in this match by scoring 110 runs.
Lobethal dismissed the strong Gumeracha batting team for 163, with R. Schubert bowling well and taking seven wickets in 19 overs.
Mounts Routed for 44
Mount Pleasant, batting first against Cudlee Creek, were in trouble early to the bowling of newcomer, Leon Holme. Wickets fell quickly for Mounts to be all out for only 44 runs after being 1/25 early in the innings. K. Phillips with accurate off spinners dismissed the tail-end batsmen.
M. Seager, opening the innings in place of Mueller (unavailable), batted steadily to top score for his side with 12.
The Creek's attack was right on the wicket as six batsmen were clean bowled. Commencing their innings just after drinks, Cudlee Creek lost E. Phillips at 9, but Ron Phillips and T. Teakle then passed Mounts' score. Phillips scored 46 of the 59-run partnership with Teakle. Scores: Mt Pleasant 44 (L. Holme 4/18, K. Phillips 3/2) v. Cudlee Creek 3/06 (R. Phillips 46, T. Teakle 27).
Best with the bat-R. Schwarz (Birdwood) 110, R. Gallas (Gumeracha) 46; R. Phillips (Cudlee creek) 46; L. Stoodley (Birdwood) 45.
Ö And Ball-R. Schubert (Lobethal) 7/53; N. Beauchamp (Lenswood) 5/28; L. Holme (Cudlee creek) 4/18; L. Herrmann (Mt Torrens) 4/28; M. Hannaford (Charleston) 4/39.
Great Start for Birdwood
Birdwood were given a great start of 94 by Bob Schwarz and Len Stoodley before the latter was dismissed by W. Turner, Charleston's spin bowler. K. Mueller and Schwarz then added 56 for the wicket.
Hannaford beat R. Lange after he and Schwarz had taken the score to 192. Charleston, with Hannaford bowling well, ran through the remaining batsmen, seven wickets falling for 19 runs. Hannaford took 4/39 from 10 overs.
Charleston lost two wickets in the last few minutes of play.
Scores: Birdwood 242 (R. Schwarz 110, L. Stoodley 45, K. Mueller 29, R. Lange 25; M. Hannaford 4/39, W. Turner 3/73, S. Lewis 2/73) v. Charleston 2/11 (L. Stoodley 2/7).
Ken Hanna Run Out 0
Gumeracha won the toss against Lobethal and batting lost L. Green (2) and J. Norsworthy (0) to the bowling of R. Schubert. Ray Gallas and G. Cornish settled in to stabilize the batting and took the score to 30 in 45 minutes.
Schubert, changing to his slows had immediate success, as Oborn caught Cornish behind for 15.
Ken Hanna, who had scored two successive centuries this season, was sensationally run out for no score. This was the result of a neat piece of fielding by G. Blundell.
Gallas and B. Symonds, although batting slowly, had regained the initiative just prior to drinks when the score was 4/81.
Following the break, Gallas mis-timed a drive and was caught of King with the total at 101. Moments later B. Symonds was bowled by Schubert. Both batsmen had batted solidly.
K. Sandercock and J. Nolan added slowly to the total. Schubert, in his 19th over, almost had the hat trick. He took three wickets with four balls.
Scores: Gumeracha 153 (R. Gallas 46, B. Symonds 38, J. Nolan 29, K. Sandercock 23; R. Schubert 7/53 v. Lobethal. [15/11/1961 8c-f.]

Football

GUMERACHA TAKES SEMI. 'B' GRADE. Except for a period in the second quarter when Lobethal scored three goals to bring them within five points of their rivals, Gumeracha always looked the better team on the day. Their bigger players proved too experienced for the young Lobethal side, although the latter revealed some excellent flashes of play. Gumeracha applied pressure from the first bounce to end the quarter with 3-5 to one goal by Lobethal, but the latter team pressed strongly in the second term to outscore Gumeracha 3-1 to 2-1. After the long interval the home team always appeared likely winners and at the final bell had an advantage of 24 points. Final scores: Gumeracha 8-13, Lobethal 6-1.
Best PlayersóGumeracha: N. Semmler (best on ground), I. Sandercock, K. Carter, I. Jamieson, D. Bell, B. Hanna. Lobethal: T. Graeber, E. Mason, G. Dearman, L. Watkins, A. Warner, R. Schapel.
GoalkickersóGumeracha: I. Jamieson 2, G. Tucker 2, B. Hanna, G. Cornish, N. Sinkinson, B. Harvey. Lobethal: T. Graeber 2, A. Warner, J. Barnes, K. Schubert, E. Mason.
SECOND SEMI. PREVIEW. There is an air about a Lobethal-Gumeracha clash which pervades the TV football world that no other match can incur. When such an engagement occurs during the major round, spectators are assured of a grim struggle which creates a sense of suspense not lifted until the last kick is taken. Once again these two teams will meet on the Birdwood oval next Saturday for the right to contest the grand final. He would be bold who would confidently predict the outcome of Saturday's match. Gumeracha has twice been defeated by Lobethal this season but in each instance the winning margin did not suggest any definite superiority of Lobethal, e.g., seven and six points respectively.
However, the fact that they have won these two matches, and their unbeaten record for the season, gives Lobethal a psychological advantage. Against this can be reckoned the fact that Lobethal has not played under match conditions for three weeks, having drawn a bye in the last minor round series. One thing which can be taken for granted, the game will be played at a terrific pace throughout. Both sides are equipped with more than a fair sprinkling of high marking exponents, but Lobethal may have the edge in this sphere. Gumeracha's play on short-passing style which can be devastatingly effective if not checked will be opposed to a long kicking game of Lobethal. Highlights of the match will be the duels between Lobethal's star centre half forward, B. Zilm, and his opposing half back, presumably R. Fuller, and the high-flying centreman R. Karutz, of Lobethal, against K. Hanna, clever pivot and leader of Gumeracha. Perhaps the fate of the game will depend on how Lobethal's defence, always a solid one, can cope with Gumeracha's goal-getting specialist, K. Sandercock, who is in good form at present. Both sides will be led by astute captains, each of whom are keen students of the game. Lobethal is selected to win but the vagaries of football fortunes make the choice a difficult one, especially when two teams are so evenly matched. Umpire O.W. Buttery will be in charge of the game.
Mt Pleasant is chosen to defeat Mt Torrens in the 'B' grade curtain-raiser semifinal. The latter team are capable of springing a surprise on their rivals but Mt Pleasant\ has twice defeated the redlegs this season in the three games played, and at full strength should do so again. The umpire will be L. Bugg. [21/8/1952 6c-f.]

INJURY TO GUMERACHA FOOTBALLER. Once again Gumeracha Football Club has a key player on the injured list. This time King Sandercock is the unfortunate. He was thought at first to have broken or cracked a bone in his shoulder, but was X-rayed at the local Hospital and it was found to be very badly bruised. He will be out of action for some time. [20/5/1953 1e.]

OPENING MATCHES IN TVFA. The season opened under ideal playing conditions. Early opening rains saw the ovals nicely grassed and ground conditions firm.
Attendances were quite good for the opening series.
All clubs were not up to full strength having been weakened by army call-ups and seasonal work on the land.
The promotion of B grade and junior players to the opposition of seasoned players in A grade showed most were in need of a match, but some good games were played. Margins in scores do not truly indicate the play.
GUMERACHA v. LOBETHAL. When Gumeracha were at home to Lobethal the match was even until half time when the home team were trailing only 14 points behind their opponents. Scoring had been low, but accurate kicking through the big sticks showed that Lobethal had notched up 7 goals 6 behinds to 5 goals 4 behinds by Gumeracha. The third quarter saw Lobethal make a definite breakthrough, outplay the Magpies' defences and by particularly fine kicking for goal conclude the term with 14 goals 9 behinds to 6 goals 7 behinds.
The final term witnessed good football with Gumeracha battling on. Lobethals, however were the better team on the day and the final score when the bell went was Lobethal 17 goals 12 behinds, Gumeracha 8 goals 8 behinds.
Goalkickers.óLobethal; B. Zilm 5, G. Jaensch 2, R. Schapel 2, J. Weston 1, R. Stansbury 3, G. Dearman 2, C. Newman 1, T. Graeber 1. Gumeracha: K. Sandercock 2, G. Cornish 2, K. Norsworthy 2, K. Bleeze, H. Symonds each 1.
Best Players.óLobethal: B. Zilm, R. Stansbury, G. Jaensch, C. Newman, T. Bartholomew.
Gumeracha: L. Sandercock, G. Cornish, H. Symonds, D. Hanna.
Prior to the commencement of this match, Mr Ron Stansbury was unanimously elected captain and B. Zilm was elected vice-captain on a vote for the Lobethal team. [5/5/1954 6ef.]

RECORD SCORE IN TORRENS VALLEY. Gumeracha, with a tally of 38-19, probably kicked an all-time record score in Torrens Valley Football Association on Saturday.. K. Sandercock kicked 23 goals.
The 30-10 kicked by Birdwood (K. Stoodley 19) was also a cricket score. This team scored 28-14 against the same team in the first round.
Three teams are again equal with 16 points on the premiership table. Gumeracha again goes into third position with Williamstown ousting Mount Pleasant to go into fourth place on percentage. Gumeracha 65.04, Williamstown 60.82, Mt Pleasant
57.62.
GUMERACHA 38-19, HOUGHTON 9-3. Umpire, F. Hancock. With only intermittent bright patches the losers could not cope with the speed and systematic play with their opponents' forwards..
Goalkickers:-Gumeracha: K. Sandercock 23, B. Moore 5, G. Cornish 4, H. Symonds 2, L. Randell 2, J. O'Dea 1, M. Symonds 1. Houghton: S. Davis 4, D. Chapman 2, J. Biddell 2, R. Dearman 1.

BIRDWOOD SUFFERS 1ST DEFEAT IN MUD. Torrens Valley Football Association suffered the poor weather conditions, which prevailed elsewhere for Saturday's games. Birdwood, the undefeated top team, went down to Gumeracha, whilst Mount Pleasant caused another upset by defeating Williamstown.
The final is a long way from being decided as the top five teams have yet to clash.
Interest is at the highest pitch.
Birdwood still retains top place over Lobethal, with Gumeracha holding third place, while Mt Pleasant has again gone into fourth position over Williamstown on percentage.
Percentages are:- Birdwood 71.62, Lobethal 69.44, Gumeracha 64.66, Mount Pleasant 57.95.
Interest is also shown in the three leading goalkickers, who are nearing the century, with the possibility of it being reached in next Saturday's matches.
K. Sandercock (Gumeracha) is leading with 97, followed by K. Stoodley (Birdwood) 92 and B. Treloar (Mt Pleasant) 86.
GUMERACHA 6-8, BIRDWOOD 4-12. Umpire L. Brown. Despite the wintry conditions a fairly even match, Birdwood held an 18 point lead in the first term, when Gumeracha took charge to hold an advantage of three points at half time 4-6 to 3-9. Gumeracha then held the lead in a low scoring last half, kicking 2-2 to 1-3.
Goalkickers:-Gumeracha: H. Symonds 2, K. Sandercock 1, Jim O'Dea 1, Jack O'Dea 1, Grantley Cornish 1. Birdwood: K. Stoodley 2, B. Mueller 1, L. Loechel 1.
Best Players:-Gumeracha: All played well. Birdwood: J. Kain, B. Mueller, E. Smedley, L. Loechel, H. Lenger. [28/7/1954 2ab.]

BIRDWOOD THRASHES LOBETHAL TO BE MINOR PREMIERS. Birdwood's outstanding win against Lobethal on Saturday secured their position as minor premiers.
Mount Pleasant's surprise win over Gumeracha took them into third place, with Gumeracha dropping to fourth. Williamstown were very unlucky to receive two forfeits in the round, which probably kept them out of the finals.
In the B grade Lobethal has gone into second place, ahead of Williamstown on percentage.
Kicking nine goals on Saturday, K. Stoodley (Birdwood) has brought his tally to 125 and taken the lead from K. Sandercock (Gumeracha) with 122. B. Treloar (Mt Pleasant) has kicked 115.
PLAYER SUSPENDED. The Commissioners found D. Chapman (Houghton) guilty of a charge of having struck an opposing Lobethal player. Chapman was suspended for six matches.
UMPIRE FOR GRAND FINAL. Information has been received from the Association secretary that R. Towers has been appointed to umpire the Grand Final in A grade.
MT PLEAS. 13-10; GUMERACHA 9-13. Umpire, F. Saxby. With good umpiring, a good clean open match resulted. The first quarter was even, both teams scoring 2-3. Mounts then had a slight edge over Gumeracha to lead at half time by seven points. The last half saw Mounts hold the initiative to gradually increase their lead by straighter kicking, notching 4-1 to 1-5.
Goalkickers:-Mt Pleasant: B. Treloar 6, L. Westphalen 2, T. Royal 2, B. Mueller 2, V. Persse 1. Gumeracha: K. Sandercock 5, G. Cornish 2, Grivell 1, H. Symonds 1.
Best Players:-Mt Pleasant: L. Westphalen, D. O'Brien, T. Woolford, L. Lintern, K. Millen. Gumeracha: G. Cornish, H. Symonds, J. Norsworthy, J. O'Dea. [25/8/1954 11ef.]

KERSBROOK HAS IMPORTANT WIN. T.V. Finals Saturday. With the minor rounds concluded in Torrens Valley Football Association interest is now focussed on the finals, which will commence on Saturday. Kersbrook, who finished seventh ended the season well by defeating semi-finalist, Mt Pleasant.
Throughout the season some close games and also some big scores have been registered, with several surprises.
Credit is due to the young players of clubs who finished out of the final four for their courage and promising form shown, against more experienced players. The weather has been ideal with the exception of one occasion.
The two teams likely to play off in the grand final on present indications are Birdwood and Gumeracha, with Lobethal and Williamstown in B grade.
Goalkickers Tie. At the end of the minor rounds, the three leading goalkickers are well past their century mark. K. Stoodley (Birdwood), K. Sandercock (Gumeracha) have tied for first place with 134 each. B. Treloar (Mt Pleasant) kicked 121.
GUMERACHA 28-25; LENSWOOD 3-1. The winners were much too strong for their opponents. Though weakened and with players recovering from colds and influenza, the losers gave a good account of themselves.
Goalkickers:-Gumeracha: K. Sandercock 10, A. Grivell 3, G. Cornish 3, Jack O'Dea 2, H. Symonds 2, B. Moore 2, J. Norsworthy 2, R. Fuller 2, Jim O'Dea, K. Hanna 1. Lenswood: N. Green 2, L. Norton 1.
Best Players:-Gumeracha: B. Symonds, Jack O'Dea, D. Hanna, K. Sandercock, D. Bell. Lenswood: R. Caldicott, J. Burford, R. Pollard, B. Giles, W. Kumnick. [1/9/1954 1d.]

GUMERACHA 8-10. MT PLEASANT 5-10. Umpire M. Ryan.
Mt Pleasant quickly opened their account from the bounce. A free to Simounds found Treloar who raised both flags.
Another forward move by Dewell, was turned by D. Hanna. Mounts again shot forward when P. Kain only managed one flag. A direct drive from the kick off found B. Moore who hit the post.
Another thrust forward by Mounts was frustrated through the services of D. Hanna, who turned the attack, only to find D. O'Brien in the Magpies' forward line, stemming this thrust.
A free to Jack O'Dea gave Gumeracha their first six pointer. Mounts added another point followed by Gumeracha through J. Grouch, with a similar score. A further forward move by Mts was stopped by Graham Cornish. Mounts added another point and their opponents two. Gumeracha held a one point advantage 1-4 to 1-3 after a sluggish quarter.
Mounts were again the first to score with a point from J. Kain. Wing play followed until Fuller sent forward only to see Mounts back line take play to the opposite wing and score another point.
A free to B. Symonds in midfield was taken by Westphalen from a misplaced kick.
He picked out Treloar to raise two flags.
Gums followed with a similar score through K. Sandercock. After a forward thrust by Mounts that broke down, B. Moore scored another major. The players on both sides were now warming up and the game was gaining pace with Treloar adding a point. Gumeracha replied in similar vein. From the kick in Mounts went through to find Treloar, notching his third goal.
With another goal for Gumeracha from B. Moore and a point from Norsworthy, the black and whites were now outplaying Mounts. Another two quick goals came from K. Sandercock's nice marks. Halftime scores:- GUMERACHA 6-6; MOUNTS 3-6.
Mount Pleasant were unable to score from their initial attack. Jack O'Dea cleared for Gumeracha. Mounts attacked again, J. Kain raising two flags. This player again scored full points shortly afterwards.
A free to Fuller found Jack O'Dea who only managed one point. Mounts were attacking better than Gumeracha but could not penetrate the latter's back line and with play seesawing for a period, points came from Treloar and Whites for Mounts.
At the other end two points to Sandercock and one to Moore reduced Gumeracha's lead to 8 points at "lemons." GUMERACHA 6-10; MOUNTS 5-8.
Both teams showed signs of fatigue. Forward thrusts on both sides were temporarily halted in this term, either through the centre or on the wings. Eventually Gumeracha broke through due to Bell, and Moore made no mistake to kick a 6 pointer.
A point to Egel for Mounts was followed up with a free to Cornish, who found Jamieson, and Moore kicked his fourth goal. A point by Treloar followed and in the remaining minutes left, play seesawed to the final bell, with neither side making any impression. Final scores:- GUMERACHA 8-10; MT PLEASANT 5-10.
Goalkickers:-Gumeracha: B. Moore 4, K. Sandercock 3, Jack O'Dea 1. Mount Pleasant: B. Treloar 3, J. Kain 2.

BIG SCORES IN TORRENS VALLEY FOOTBALL. Sandercock May Break Record. Although rain fell on most ovals in the Torrens Valley Association on Saturday, all games returned remarkably high scores, K. Sandercock of Gumeracha, with another 5 goals, brings his total for the year to 90, and with six matches still left to complete the season he may break his record of 138 goals kicked last season.
Gumeracha 19ñ11 d. Kersbrook 8. Gumeracha continued their series of wins on the home ground when they easily accounted for Kersbrook. £114 GATE AT BIRDWOOD. Magpies Toss the Tigers. The second semi-final of the Torrens Valley Football Association, played at Birdwood on Saturday, drew almost a record crowd, which paid £114 at the gate.
In beautiful Spring sunshine the old rivals, Gumeracha and Lobethal played a hard game with the honours going to Gumeracha. B Grade minor premiers, Houghton, defeated Mount Torrens in the curtain raiser.
GUMERACHA 13-15; LOBETHAL 9-11.
Both teams took the ground looking extremely fit. Umpire R. Towers had charge of the game and gave a polished exhibition, his decisions being met with general approval from both teams.
Gums were away immediately and K. Hanna at centre, found B. Moore who marked brilliantly and finished off with a six pointer. Back at centre Gums again showed supremacy in the ruck and with a penalty kick once again put Moore into position for two flags.
The crowd cheered wildly and Lobethal gained control but back to Gums area where Grivell added a goal. Lobethal went into attack and Bartholomew playing well at centre, put K. Oborn into position for a six pointer for the tigers. At the other end Sandercock missed with a quick snap shot and D. Plummer kicked off into the half forward area, only to see it returned again, but E. Mason and M. Plummer, backing up well turned the attack.
Gums Captain H. (Bill) Symonds marked brilliantly and from a running shot brought up two flags from a glorious piece of football. T. Zilm and T. Graeber were getting the best of the wing duels but D. Newman and K. Plummer missed with snap shots for goal, and K. Oborn kicked the Tigers second goal for the quarter.
From the bounce again K. Hanna again put his side into attack and his efforts were outstanding. With G. Cornish and N. Symonds taking control of the ruck Gums were turning on some good football. Jaensch at half back for Lobethal, was playing a grand game and E. Mason and D. Plummer often broke up attacks that looked bad for Lobethal. N. Symonds goaled for Gums from an almost impossible angle, and B. Moore added another full pointer from a scrimmage in front of goal.
Lobethal were desperate and could not stop Gums all out attack. Quick goals from G. Cornish and H. Symonds made Lobethal realise they had to do something to check the runaways. With a flash of good football Stanbury goaled for Lobethal.
Silva, Lobethal's tall ruckman, missed from easy range, but T. Zilm marked well to run through and bring up another goal for the Tigers.
At the bell for the second term Gums were again attacking strongly, but Emms and Jaensch held safely for Lobethal. K. Hanna and (Bill) Symonds turned in a wonderful display of football for Gumeracha in this quarter. Trev. Bartholomew, although opposed to Hanna, was playing a grand game for Lobethal.
Gumeracha 9-7; Lobethal 4-5.
After the long break Lobethal was determined to make amends and with B. Zilm coming into the picture they took over. D. Newman and R. Newman took control from the rucks and forced the play into their forward area. Quick snap shots by K. Plummer and R. Newman missed the tall uprights and D. Hanna for Gums was brilliant in defence and Bell was strong at full back. Koehne again missed the target for Lobethal and Gums came back into the attack but only to find C. Newman striking form and marking brilliantly to turn back the attack. Don Newman goaled for Lobethal and also added a full pointer.
Gums flashed back into the attack and with exchanges of brilliant football from both teams Norsworthy added another goal for Gums. Lobethal's turn and Don Newman again scored a major, and good football from Koehne and R. Zilm enabled T. Zilm to score another goal for Lobethal who were now playing their best football for the day.
Not to be outdone, Gums again took over and with K. Hanna passing to H. Symonds another goal was added to bring the scores at the end of the 3rd quarter to Gumeracha 11-10; Lobethal 8-5.
Away from centre and Koehne again brought up one flag for Lobethal. Both teams were now feeling the effects of the hot day and the pace slackened somewhat, but both back lines were battling hard. J. O'Dea kicked a goal for Gums and Lobethal replied with a quick goal from R. Newman. D. Newman's 60-yarder hit the goal post.
Gums again took control and carried the play into their forward area. Sandercock, who was rarely sighted all day, missed from an easy position. M. Plummer was playing well in a back pocket for Lobethal. From centre Symonds drove in but a splendid mark by C, Newman turned the play and Lobethal were again in attack, but were tiring badly and only the sound defence of Jaensch and D. Plummer with E. Mason playing well kept Gums repeated attacks at bay.
J. O'Dea marked in front of goal and his kick was safe. Lobethal went back into attack with B. Zilm fighting gamely to hold the score down, but Gums were finishing the stronger of the two teams and at the final bell had a commanding lead. The football turned on by the Gumeracha side was little below brilliant, and only the strong defence of Lobethal kept them down to a medium score. K. Hanna was probably the best man on the ground-his play and sporting qualities are outstanding features of good football.
Goalkickers: Gumeracha, 3 to B. Moore, H. Symonds. Grivell 2. G. Cornish, N. Symonds, J. Norsworthy, J. O'Dea and F. O'Dea. Lobethal, T. Zilm 3, K. Oborn and Don Newman 2, R. Stansbury, R. Newman.
Best Players: Gumeracha, K. Hanna, H. Symonds, D. Bell, G. Cornish, J. O'Dea, D. Hanna. Lobethal, T. Bartholomew, T. Zilm, G. Jaensch, Don Newman, T. Graeber, C. Newman. [14/9/1955 3ef.]

LOBETHAL WINS DOUBLE FOOTBALL PREMIERSHIP. All-Time Record Gate. A crowd which paid an all-time record in gate takings, £183, saw Lobethal football teams win a double premiership at Birdwood oval on Saturday.
In A grade Lobethal defeated Gumeracha, whilst the B grade game also went to Lobethal at the expense of Houghton.
Following an incident in the last quarter of the B grade match seven members of Houghton team were reported by the Central and boundary umpires for alleged breaches of the Rules.
During the interval the President of the Torrens Valley Association (Mr Don Norsworthy) presented the Mail and Pflaum Medals to the 1955 winners-Mail Medal, A grade, J. Kain, Birdwood, 26 points. Pflaum Medal, B grade resulted in a tie. H. Drury, Houghton; and M. Kowald, Mt Torrens.
The Association also decided to donate a medal to each B grade player.
The A grade teams, Lobethal and Gumeracha, were both at full strength and received a tremendous ovation from the crowd. Umpire Bob Towers had charge of the game and his exhibition was quite sound despite the very wet conditions.
Lobethal was first away with a free to T. Graeber. Waller cleared for Gumeracha and H. Symonds drove in, but Jaensch licked well out of the danger area. T. Zilm gained control, but the ball soon returned to Gumeracha's area. Koehne put K. Plummer in position for two flags. From centre Don Newman passed to Ken Oborn and R. Stanbury goaled again for Lobethal. Gumeracha were stopped by E. Mason, but Hanna to Moore and Gumeracha scored a point. From the kick-off Cornish registered another point. Grivell freed and to Cornish-a single. Gumeracha attacked strongly and E. Mason marked in the goalmouth to clear for the tigers. Cornish passed to Moore-again only one flag.
Grivell again marked well and put H. Symonds in position to bring up Gumeracha's first goal. C. Newman saved for Lobethal, but J. Bell raised one flag. Eckermann into attack shot to B. Zilm and to K. Oborn for one flag, T. and B. Zilm combined for a goal. Gums attacked again but found Jaensch sound in defence.
K. Hanna cleared for Gumeracha, but Jaensch was there and his kick to R. Newman and to T. Zilm was a goal. Moore again missed and B. Zilm cleared to T. Zilm for Tigers and one point. Carter saved well for Gums, and the quarter ended in Lobethal's favour. Lobethal 4ñ2; Gumeracha 1ñ6.
A goal to Moore and the rain started. Waller was strong in the back lines for Gumeracha. Norsworthy was also playing well for his team and J. Bell was a thorn in the Tigers' side. M. Plummer from wing and Bell saved and up to K. Sandercock and two flags waved.
T. Bartholomew was getting the breaks at centre, but T. Graeber kicked the wrong way and put Gums into attack again. Zilm marked well to pass to Jaensch, but Bell was in the way. M. Plummer gained possession and on to T. Bartholomew to Koehne and he found B. Zilm for one flag. B. Silva replaced C. Zilm who received an injury.
Plat see-sawed and neither team could penetrate. Rain was making football difficult. R. Newman's snap shot hit the post. Koehne intercepted and back to K. Oborn for a goal. Symonds to G. Cornish was a goal from a lovely running shot for Gums.
Mason cleared and K. Oborn marked well, but missed the target. Stanbury playing on a wing found Eckermann and to Don Newman, who goaled for the Tigers.
Lobethal again broke through with B. Zilm and K. Oborn showing good football.
K. Plummer scouting well, passed to Don Newman to register another full pointer. Waller was holding the fort for Gums, on the bell for half time, Lobethal 7ñ5; Gumeracha 4ñ6.
Lobethal went straight into attack, but J. Bell and Somerton combined well to H. Symonds to bring up another goal for Gumeracha. T. Zilm sent a long kick to Silva-one flag. Silva marked to find B. Zilm for a good goal to Lobethal. Away from centre and Bartholomew passed to D. Newman and R. Newman marked well-six points.
Lobethal were now exerting themselves and Gumeracha were on the defensive. D. Hanna saved repeatedly and Grant Cornish also showed excellent form in this term. Sandercock could only raise one flag. Bell marked the kick in and brought up a point and repeated the mark to pass to K. Sandercock who goaled for Gums. Norsworthy from centre to G. Cornish and one flag. Koehne marked the kick in, but Hanna took over and to B. Symonds and K. Sandercock for another point. A penalty free to Norsworthy, but his kick was astray. E. Mason again cleared to T. Graeber, but Hanna was in the way and B. Symonds to H. Symonds, only to find Don Newman under it, up to J. Emms, who was now playing well, but Gums cleared again and K. Sandercock brought up two flags.
Rain was continuous. Jaensch, like a rock, saved again, but B. Symonds marked well and from a scrimmage a goal was scored for Gums.
Several points were scored from snap shots, but the football had deteriorated and scrimmages were frequent. Lobethal had several tries and D. Bell saved on several occasions, to put his side back into attack.
Lobethal opened up and Bartholomew to B. Zilm in front was a goal. Somerton put Cornish into attack and one flag was raised and J. Emms cleared on the ball to save well for Tigers. Lobethal 10ñ8; Gumeracha 8ñ12.
The last quarter commenced with rain falling steadily and Gums went into attack. Lobethal retaliated. D. Newman cleared for Tigers and up field to R. Stanbury, thence to B. Zilm for a goal. D. Plummer dashed through to save a goal.
The rain eased and spectators again took up their positions, T. Bartholomew to K. Oborn and the tigers were away again. A single to Lobethal and two to Gums, then Bell cleared a kick in, passed to Sandercock and a goal for Gums. Fuller (19th man) took the field and passed to Moore who again goaled for Gums. Gumeracha were now back into the game.
Fuller brought new life to the side and passed to Symonds (B. Moore's goal evened the score and Gums were racing in). Fuller again to K. Sandercock and Gumeracha goaled to take the lead for the first time.
The excitement was now intense and with only 7 minutes left to play the crowd were on their toes. Lobethal, not to be outdone, fought back well. Silva missed badly from right in front. T. Bartholomew put his side back into play with a pass to T. Zilm to K. Oborn and a goal put Lobethal one point in front. From centre and Eckermann to K. Oborn out to R. Newman and Koehne brought up another badly needed goal for Lobethal.
From centre K. Hanna passed but Bartholomew picked up to pass to K. Plummer, who found K. Oborn and his kick was safe for two flags. Rain began to fall again but the game looked all over. Gums attacked, but Jaensch, sound in defence, cleared again, up to D. Hanna and to K. Hanna and to B. Moore, but a free to Emms saved again. Gumeracha again attacked, but Emms cleared and from centre to the half forward, where Waller, brilliant all day, cleared for Gums. Lobethal 14ñ10; Gumeracha 11ñ15.
Goalkickers-Lobethal: B. Zilm 4, K. Oborn 3, Don Newman 2, K. Plummer, R. Stanbury, T. Zilm, N. Newman, R. Koehne 1 each. Gumeracha: K. Sandercock 5, B. Moore, H. Symonds, G. Cornish 2 each.
Best players-Lobethal: B. Zilm, G. Jaensch, T. Bartholomew, T. Zilm, D. Newman, K. Oborn, R. Stanbury. Gumeracha: B. Symonds, H. Symonds, D. Hanna, J. Waller, J. Bell, Graeme Cornish, J. Norsworthy. [28/9/1955 10b-d.]

GUMERACHA PROMISES STRONG DEFENCE. Gumeracha, winner of a great many premierships, again promises to turn out a capable side. Last season the Magpies were very strong on defence, especially across half back, and it was there where they won many a game. That line of Dean Hanna, John Waller, and Ken Carter won handsomely more times than not, giving Gumeracha a springboard type of attack. Further back still stands Donald Bell, the best full-back in the Association.
Ex-Maitland player John Bell, will captain-coach the team for the fourth successive season. A strong vigorous player, he has filled the centre position vacated by Ken Hanna excellently.
Gumeracha will lose two of its best forwards when Barry Moore (centre half forward) and King Sickerdick (full forward) will be missing from the line-up. Moore has been transferred to Kimba. Since arriving there he has undertaken the job of Association Secretary of the Kimba League. Sandercock's retirement would have been felt more had his understudy, Garry Tucker, not come along. Tucker last season was missing from the team most of the season with a leg injury.
It is expected that John Norsworthy will take over the centre half forward position in which he played quite well at times last season.
Kersbrook rover, Ross Schlein, had a practice run with Gumeracha, however, little hope of a clearance is expected for this player. A weakness in the rucks may be the Magpies' main shortcoming, but with good small men they could, as they did at times
last season, overcome this.
The Magpies could go further than the first semi-final this season. [22/4/1959 8ab.]

GUMERACHA BALL. In the Gumeracha Town Hall a ball was held, being the last function prior to the Grand Finale of the Mayoral Competition in aid of Hospital funds.
The decorations were beautiful and appropriate for the occasion. In the background on stage a large drawing of the Hospital was set up with amber lights across the front. Bowls of red hot pokers, gladioli, and agapanthus were at the foot of the stage, providing an attractive effect. The amber lights were continued right around the hall, also numerous skits. Red, blue and amber balloons were hung in a large cluster from the centre of the hall.
Credit is due to two conveners, Mesdames Frank Dohnt and Kingsley Sandercock and to all those who took part in helping. Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs Walters' orchestra. Confetti and novelties were in the hands of a capable MC, Mr Jack Wytkin.
The balloons were let down at midnight. Mr Ray Amber moved a vote of thanks to all who have helped with staging functions during the Mayoral Competitions. Mr Eric Jamieson kindly provided microphones for the evening. [17/2/1954 7d.]

GUMERACHA CONCERT. A concert given by the Lobethal Harmony Club was well attended in the Gumeracha Town Hall. Associate members rendered duet, solos, violin numbers and the Craig Bros were humorous entertainers.
The programme opened with the Song of Australia. Mesdames Frank Dohnt and Kingsley Sandercock convened a home-made sweets table and it was well patronised.
Funds were in aid of the Mayoral Competitor Ray Amber for the Hospital Wing. [18/11/1953 6e.]
