Occupation: Butter and Cheese maker

Mr. F. VV. Dohnt, whose father and grandfather came out to South Australia from Germany in 1838 in the sailing ship "Prince George", was born at Woodside in 1870. After receiving his education at the Lobethal School he learnt cheese and butter making at the Onkaparinga factory, under the direction of Mr. G. F. Osborne, then regarded as one of the best experts in that vocation. At the age of 18 years he went to Port Pirie to become Manager of the factory there, but owing to drought conditions in that district the factory was later forced to close down, and he returned to Woodside. From Woodside he came to Gumeracha to undertake the management of the local Co-op. Factory, where he produced butter and cheese of the finest quality. Later on Mr. Dohnt went to Meadows, and took over the management of the Kondoparinga Factory, now owned by the South Australian Farmers' Union, but returning to Gumeracha in 1906 he purchased the local factory, and carried on cheese-making until 1912, when the factory was partially destroyed by fire. He continued, however, to make butter, and in 1915 purchased the local butchering business from Mr. Fred. Kingston, in which his sons assisted. In 1922 he sold his interests in the butter factory to "Amscol", and purchasing from the Stott family the property always known as "The Cottages", he and some of his family combined butchering and agricultural pursuits. In 1923 he bought the fertile Kenton Flats from the W. B. Randell Estate, on which he has since run a herd of pure-bred Friesians, the butchering business being carried on by two of his sons.
Mr. Dohnt married Miss S. M. (Lena) Norsworthy, their family comprising five sons and two daughters. Their residence is "Olde Court", next to the Salem Church, and occupies a delightful situation overlooking Kenton Flat, with Kenton Hill in the background. This home was the first police station and residential quarters in Gumeracha, and the one-time cell is to-day used for a very different purpose, namely, the family pantry!
