James Paterson
Son of Alexander Paterson and Elizabeth Moir. Born 1833 Aberdeen, Scotland Baptised 24 Aug 1832 Saint Cyrus, Kinardine, Scotland Died 22 Sep 1905 Wellcamp, Queensland, Australia, age 71 or 72 years Buried 29 Sep 1905 Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery, Old presbyterian Section, Source for person: Hi Colin I thought I'd sent this message last night but can't find it in my 'sent items' folder so will resend in case. Just writing to thank you for your Sandercock Family website as it's helped fill in a big gap in my family history on my grandmother's side. I am distantly connected to you through your aunt, Claire Sandercock, who married one of my Paterson relatives. Thomas Skene Paterson was descended from James Paterson; my branch of the family is descended from his brother William. Some of my relatives have traced our line back to William and his father Alexander but until I saw your site I wasn't aware that William's brother James had also emigrated from Scotland to the Toowoomba district. Nobody in my family knows much about the Patersons at all, probably because my grandmother's father, John Paton Paterson left his three young children in the care of his sister Elizabeth Moir Paterson to raise after his wife died. Elizabeth sent them to boarding school in Brisbane and they spent their holidays with her at Hides Hotel (Cairns) which she owned and ran, so they probably didn't see much of their Toowoomba Paterson relatives. John Paton virtually disappeared after his wife's death. We know he visited his children a few times and that he lived at Hall's Creek for a long time. We also have some war records - his horse was shot from under him at one stage. Rumour is that he had an alcohol problem and that he didn't think much of western civilisation, preferring to live with the Aborigines at Halls Creek - maybe there are lots of Aboriginal Paterson relatives we don't know about!. One of my relatives recently tracked down his death certificate. He died at Sunset, a hospital at Nedlands, north of Perth on 20 Jan 1951, aged 75 and is buried in the Prebyterian Cemetery, Karrakatta, W.A. I'd love to know more about John Paton's early life and about his Paterson relatives. Is it possible for me to contact Noelinda Lawlor whose email you quote as your main source for the Paterson information on your site? If you and/or Noelinda would like to know more about John Paton's descendants, please email me or you could look at the 'Hinckfuss' family tree my sister has put on Ancestry.com. Do you know if there are any Patersons still living in the Toowoomba area? I live in Kingaroy, only an hour and a half hour's drive away, so could easily contact them if any are interested in the family history. Last time I was in Toowoomba I tried to find William's grave and couldn't, but found the graves of James and his wife Margaret Skene, and next to that the grave of their son David Skene. The inscriptions read: 'Sacred to the memory of JAMES PATERSON, native of Aberdeen, Scotland. Beloved husband of MARGARET SKENE. Died Sept 22 1905, aged 73 years. Blessed are the dead which die in the lord. Also his wife MARGARET SKENE PATERSON native of Aberdeen, Scotland, died June 16, 1923 in her 83rd year.' 'In Sacred Memory of my beloved husband and our father DAVID SKENE PATERSON, died 29th Nov. 1928, aged 58 years. Be still and know that I am God' I have a couple of photos of the graves and inscriptions I could email if anyone's interested. Once again, thanks for all your great info. Barbara PatersonBorn 13 Jan 1868 Queensland, Australia Source for person: Interestingly Barbara had 7 children (one was my grandmother). She was married to Charles Patterson (2 ts) who was the first major of Toowong. She had twin boys (Alexander and James). Both boys went to Gallipoli and then onto the Somme. Uncle Alec died at the Somme and is buried at Villers Bretenneux. Special tribute to the twins has happened in Toowong, with the Brisbane City Council placing a photo of the twins on a city council bus and city-cat. I have attached a photo of the tribute. Also Uncle Alec was especially mentioned at the Toowong Dawn Service yesterday. 26 Apr 2015 4.
David Skene PatersonBorn 13 Jul 1869 Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia Died 29 Nov 1928 Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, age 59 years Buried 29 Nov 1928 Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery, Old presbyterian Section death_notice_ds_paterson death_notice_ds_paterson DEATH OF MR. D. S, PATERSON. The death of Mr. David Skene Paterson, of Croxley, Toowoomba, occurred on November 29th, after a short iliness. The late Mr. Paterson, who was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Paterson, of Prospect HiIl, Wellcamp, was born at Toowoomba, on July 18th, 1869. He was best known in the Blackall district, where the greater part of his life was spent (says the "Courier.") He Joined Moffat Bros., Bloomfield, as a Jackeroo, in 1891, ultimately becoming manager of their station. He afterwards became manager of Thornleigh and Springfield, for the late Mr. J. H. Hart. In 1914 he acquired a sheep property near Blackall, and in 1917 undertook the management of Athol for Mr. W. G. Davies, during his absence at the war. He was a public-spirited man, and was well- known on most of the public bodies of that district, having been chairman of the Kargoolnah Shire Council, delegate of the executive of the United Graziers' Assoclation, member of the hospital committee, and treasurer of the Blackall Club. The late Mr. Paterson was a man of kindly personality and of strict integrity, and was held in high esteem by all classes in the community. In 1927, the deceased gentleman purchased Croxley, where he lived till his death. In 1899 he married Miss Lucy Moffat, elder daughter of Mr. John Moffat, Camoola Park, Longreach, and he is survived by his widow, four sons, and two grandchildren. The sons are Messrs. John Moffat Paterson (manager of Athol), James Hugh Paterson, Thomas Skene Paterson, and David Skene Paterson, all of Croxley. 5.
