There was a problem for the parents of the children who were Baptist parishioners’ the man teaching their children was a Roman Catholic. Mr V.A. Lee, after discussions, gathered a group pf parents in a private house. The group decided Mr Hayes could not teach their children. Every family signed a petition to the Education Department, with the exception of Mrs A.J. 'Gertie' Laughton and Mrs Ralph 'Olive' Sandercock. The result was that the school was closed at the end of the second term in 1943. The children then went to the Gumeracha school, which unfortunately did not have enough desks and students had to sit three to a desk. Transport was provided for the Kenton Valley children in the shape of a dark grey 1936 Chevrolet 'paddy wagon'. Its driver was Mrs A.J. 'Gertie' Laughton. There was room for two 'Juniors' on the front seat under the watchful eyes of the driver, and as many as could be packed in through a double door in the rear. The van had no side windows and the only ventilation for the rear compartment was through small vents in the front corners. The driver was able to quell any unruly behaviour merely by looking at her passengers through the small rear window above the front seat. The sisters Fae and June Boerth, Brian Camac, Grantley Cornish, Keith Plummer, Robert 'Bob' Laughton, Roger Lee, Fae Patullo, Denzil Sandercock, Peter Sandercock, Denis Seidel, and Ronda Wagenknecht travelled in the 'Black Maria' twice a day. GUMERACHA TENNIS TOURNAMENT. The Gumeracha Tennis Club's annual tournament is being conducted over three days this year. It commenced last Saturday and will be continued over next Saturday and Monday. The total number of entries (136) is about average. The competitors are drawn from the Hills districts with several coming from Gawler and Yorke Peninsula. Mr Geoff Sinkinson is the organising secretary. [31/1/1952 1f.] COMING OF AGE PARTY AT GORGE KIOSK. A party was tendered Mr Donald Bell by his parents, Mr and Mrs D. Bell, of Gumeracha, to celebrate his coming of age. Donald turned 21 on Christmas Day. Approximately 50 young people gathered at the Gorge Kiosk for the occasion. During the evening many games were interspersed with dancing. Mr D. Sandercock won the musical arms for the men, and Claire Sinkinson for the ladies. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Pam Smith and Mr Malcolm Nickels. A duet was sung by Misses Betty Sinkinson and Lynette Bell. The toast to Donald was submitted by Mr Frank Dohnt and the traditional key was given him by his father. Donald's cake was made by Mrs L. Sister Roma Sandercock and a colleague, who left South Australia last January for a twelve month round the world tour, are now in Rome. Their next call is Paris. The girls are having a wonderful time and great experience. Roma is the daughter of Mr and Mrs C. Sandercock. Messrs Denzil Sandercock and Dean Hanna have returned from a cruise, calling at all capital cities, via Suva, after a splendid trip. [17/9/1958 11d.] GUMERACHA TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL TOURNAMENT. An excellent number of entries were received for the Annual Tournament, which was held on January 17, 24, and 26. Another court was laid down in December, making it possible for an extra event to be added-Men's Championship Doubles. Mr Frank Dohnt presented a beautiful trophy for the Men's Championship Singles, which is to be won three times by the same person. The tournament proved to be a huge success, and on Friday, January 30, the Annual Tournament Ball was held in the Gumeracha Institute, where presentation of trophies were the main attraction of the evening. Trophies were presented by Mr S.G. Edwards, president of the club. An excellent crowd attended from surrounding districts. The hall was decorated by members of the club, and the Jay-Gee Orchestra supplied the music. Gross takings for the evening were approximately £18, and a competition for a duck was won by Mrs Allen Bleeze. [4/2/1959 12d.] CAMERA CLUB EXHIBITION AT GUMERACHA. The third annual exhibition of the Gumeracha Camera Club was held in the Gumeracha Institute where exhibits of photos of local and other interests were shown to a very good crowd. Fifteen members from other clubs were present, and the president, Mr Eric Jamieson, welcomed everyone. One hundred and fifty five colour slides and 36 black and white entries were received- a much improved effort compared with previous years. Outright awards for colour went to-Black and white, D.P. Carmichael; (C), Mr D.P. Woods (2), Mr C. Reed. After the slides had been screened a movie was shown, which was loaned by Canadian Pacific. A very tasty supper concluded a very enjoyable evening. [25/2/1959 4d.] BAD TASTE BALL AT GUMERACHA. The "Bad Taste ball," held at Gumeracha recently, produced a big crowd and much "Bad Taste." The couple chosen by the judges, Mr and Mrs Kingsmill, who appeared in the worst taste, were Mr Graeme Cornish and Miss Josephine Bleeze. Josephine wore a tennis frock with black stockings, odd shoes, and a fur stole. Graeme was attired in his best football guernsey and old working trousers, which combined well with his dinner jacket, vest, and top hat. Outstanding costumes among the others were Mr Denzil Sandercock, who came in his pyjamas. Ken Cooper was amusing with his long underwear. Mrs Wally Giles-Clarke cut a manly dish in her combinations, whilst her husband shivered in his tennis shorts, etc. Mrs Brian Symonds was dressed casually in her slacks and sports shirt, whilst Mrs M.A. Guthrie in her bathing cap, size 10 shoes, etc was very humorous. Aside from these few there were many outstanding costumes. Prizewinners during the night included Mrs Bowey, who won the electric frying pan, and Mr and Mrs Giles-Clarke, who won the lucky spot dance. The ladies of the Bleeze for Mayor committee served a lovely supper in the new supper room. Proceeds of the night were in aid of the Institute. [6/5/1959 3a.] GUMERACHA PERSONAL.
