I have included a lot of newspaper and magazine articles that mention Don below. Unfortunately, I cannot provide a source reference to them, as most are taken from clippings Don and his wife Dell kept, but did not notate the source or date of the article.

A poem written about Don by his Mother-In-Law, Isabella (Bella) Rashleigh (nee Conway).

I don’t work for a living,
I get along alright.
I don’t slave all day,
Perhaps it’s because I’m not built that way.
But give me a nail and a hammer,
and a picture to hang on the wall.
Give me a good step ladder
(You know that I could fall)
Give me a couple of waiters,
And a bottle of old brown ale,
And I’ll bet you I’ll hang up that picture,
If someone drives the nail.

A poem about Don written by his youngest son, Allan, for Don’s funeral.

His Sporting Life
In the country he played cricket and tennis
That’s where he learnt to be a menace
He even rode his father’s horses
Throughout the country courses
On the pool or ping pong table
He was sharp and very able
We would play cards like crib and poker
And when he had a good hand he’d smile like the joker
When fishing he would say
Have you had a bite today
Because I’ve got another on the way
But it was on the square of green
Whether in singles or in a team
That’s where his skills were truly to be seen
Either drawing right to the jack
Sometimes even taking it back
Or looking for the bowl to be sat
So whether you went with him fishing or bowls
There would always be stories to be told
And many lined with laughter of gold
A fierce competitor he’s always been
With a will to win he was always keen
All these games he taught me to play
And many lessons were hard I must say
And although he’s gone he’ll still guide my way
Because I’ll remember him every day.

Don Sandercock represented Queensland at Lawn Bowls for many years - from 1960 through till until 1982. I do not have a full list of all the times he represented Qld, as Bowls Queensland have lost (due to flooding) their records from the period he represented Qld. I have put the following together from various documents that I found after his death.
1963 - Represented Qld against New South Wales in Sydney.
1964 - Represented Qld against Victoria in Brisbane.
1964 - Represented Qld against Victoria in Melbourne.
1964 - Represented Qld against New South Wales in Brisbane.
1966 - Represented Qld against unknown interstate.
1968 - Represented Qld against New South Wales in Brisbane.
1968 - Represented Qld at Australian Championships in Hobart.
1968 - Represented Qld against Victoria in Melbourne.
1969 - Represented Qld against Victoria in Brisbane.
1973 - Represented Qld against New South Wales in Sydney.
1973 - Represented Qld against Victoria in Melbourne.
1973 - Represented Qld against on Gold Coast.
1982 - Played against Australia’s Commonwealth Games team in pairs and fours as practice for the games - in fours defeating the Commonwealth Games gold medalists.
1982 - Represented Qld at A.B.C. National Interstate Sides Championship in Sydney.

After 1982 Don retired from interstate bowls, and concentrated on local competitions on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. He (with his wife Dell) were prolific winners in these competitions, in particular the Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival (in mixed pairs and mixed fours).
There was also the annual Sandercock Cup between the Darling Downs and Sunshine Coast districts, both of which he had represented.

Oakey bowlers to represent Qld
Don Sandercock, a member of the Oakey Bowls Club, has been selected to represent Queensland as a third in games against New South Wales and Victoria.
Don commenced playing bowls at the age of 25. His club was then Dalby. Two years later he was selected to play for Queensland, and he played continuously for the State for nine years until 1968.
At that time he took up residence in the Oakey area, and purchased a warm milk farm on the outskirts of town.
He has been a member of the Condamine Association, he also won the inter-Association pairs and fours.
This year Don was a member of the teams which won the Downs Association Pairs and Fours.
His best win was the Centenary Singles at Dalby in which 140 top bowlers from Brisbane, Kingaroy and other areas participated
As a member of Oakey Club he has won the Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours. He is currently senior vice-president of Oakey Bowls Club.

Beach combination wins after producing thrilling comeback
1996

Maroochydore Beach’s New Zealand import Murray George lifted his team to a magnificent last end victory after appearing down and out in the final of the Suncorp Sunshine Coast Winter Carnival Mixed Fours at Kawana Waters yesterday.
George played a sensational bowl with his second last chance to take the shot away from opponent Don Sandercock but the drama began to unfold many ends before that shot. George’s team of Keith George, Joan Burmaz and Nick Burmaz had fallen behind 10-18 after dropping consecutive 2, 5 and 4 at the thirteenth end.
Sandercock’s side of Dell Sandercock, Claire Paterson and Lou Breen were seemingly on track to add Suncorp title No. 5 on the next end, holding three shots before George split two bowls and moved the jack to his own bowls for three up. Sandercock responded with a four for 22-13 but George’s team fought back with 1, 1 and 3 on a short end to be 22-18 down playing the 20th end.
Back to a long end, Sandercock again held the advantage but George’s last bowl “charlied” out the shot leaving a three shot situation. Sandercock was spot on with a drive to kill the end and George repeated the long end. Joan Burmaz, playing second, trailed the jack for three shots before Breen, Nick Burmaz forced to play a swinger jagged the kitty to the rink boundary. George drew two shots while Don Sandercock went narrow to give the Kiwis four shots and the match was tied 22-22 with one end to play.
Joan Burmaz was again next to the jack with a wide hand draw but Paterson again gave the Sandercock combination the advantage.
George then played the championship clincher to move the jack 10-inches for three shots. Sandercock missed with drive number one and after great deliberation George opted to play a block short. In a rare miss George was astray but was inches narrow leaving the George team with a remarkable fightback victory.Today’s Suncorp action moves to the sectional play of the Mixed Pairs at all Sunshine Coast clubs from 9am.

Don fires
Don Sandercock put in a strong finish to win the AGO Master Pairs bowls at Moorooka yesterday.
Sandercock, of Maroochydoore, and Stan Coomber, of Banyo, scored a five on the second end against Tarragindi pair Peter Catterall arid Graham Stanton for a 5-1 lead.
Stanton won the next three ends to lead 8-5 and maintained this lead to be in front 17-15 after 16 ends. However Sandercock scored two singles, a two and two singles to win an excellent final 21-17.

VICTORIA drew level in the interstate bowls series against Queensland when they won the second Test at Southport yesterday, 122 shots to 177.
The series will be decided by the third Test at Chermside in Brisbane today. Queensland won the first Test at Newmarket on Wednesday.
Victoria won three rinks to two. Despite a big win in the last match yesterday, where the four skipped by Maroochydore's Don Sandercock defeated Ray Laycock’s four 39-13, the Victorians had too big a lead.
The four skipped by Keith Poole, of Caloundra, containing the two Gold Coast members of the Queensland team, Don Peoples of Southport and Artie Booth, of Kingscliff, beat Jack Wilson’s four 29-23.
Scores: Poole d Wilson 29-23; M. Grimshaw (Vic) d N. Hendricks (Maroochydore) 25-16; J. Snell (Vic) G. Cook (Mackay) 16; D. Sherman (Vic) d N. Bartlem (Rockhampton 25-17; Sandercock d Laycock 39-13. Victoria d Queensland 122-117

196?

Dalby was strongly represented at the Kingaroy Masters Carnival.
A rink (l to r): D.B Sandercock, K. Rehbein (Bundaberg) G.L. Sandercock and S. Rehbein (Bundaberg) won the final and received the trophies from President Lin Stebbens.
J.J. McGahan played in the first three games, and G.L. Sandercock took his place when there was a bereavement in his family.
S.E. Keys eliminated R.B. Derrick in the singles 31-30 at the 39th end after three hours of play, and beat the titleholder (M. Davey, of South Coast) 31-26 in the semi-final. He lost to A. Semgreen (Kingaroy), who won the title twice previously, and took the final, 18-31 in a semi final.
T.E. Head and Keys qualified for a quarter-final of the pairs, but the latter had to play in the singles, and R. Brinkley joined Head, who became skip. They lost 15-23.

SANDY BAY Bowls Club's green superintendent, Reg Walton, has the 12 rinks for today's opening of the interstate teams series in the best condition they have ever been.
The rain on Saturday has greatly improved the two greens.
“The greens should be running at 14 seconds at the outset, and then increase in pace to between 14 1/2 and 15s. dependent on the heat." Mr Walton said.
There is not a patch anywhere, despite trying conditions, and they are the correct shade to produce the required pace.
The three-day interstate series in which all States play against each other will open today at Sandy Bay at 2 pm with Victoria playing Tasmania, New South Wales meeting West Australia, and Queensland playing South Australia,
Tasmania beat a Victorian representative side last month and they could gain their best result in this series for the ABC Shield and A. U. Alley trophy now held by Victoria.
Six games will be played tomorrow at Rosny Park, starting at 10 am and 2pm, and the final six games will be played at Buckingham on Thursday.
Today will mark the start of the official functions in connection with the Australian championships, which start on Friday,
At 11 am will be the Lord Mayor’s reception at the Town Hall; at 2 pm the president; of the Australian Bowls Council (Mr Gordon Stokes) will open the interstate series at Sandy Bay; and the official dinner will be held at 7 pm at Laetare Gardens, Moonah.

Men's Single Upsets
THE MDBA Winter Carnival prestige men's singles semi-finals today are shaping up as a prize battle following a number of upsets in yesterday's play.
Last year's prestige singles winner Lance Joyce of Twin Towns was defeated by Gympie's Doug Tebbit 31-19 in an upset match.
And MDBA champion Jack Lake was defeated by Maroochydore Swan's Don Sandercock 31-30.
The other semi-final match is between Buderim's Ron Bichel and Doug Tebbit.
The grand finals at Palmwoods Bowls club at 1 pm will follow the semi-finals.
In other games for the play off of the best 16 players, Woombye's Lindsay Evans, 31 defeated Gordon Doniger 22, and Buderim's Ron Bichel 31 beat Gympie's Geoff Toop 25. Maroochydore Beach's Graham Clarke 31 defeated Buderim's Ray Mitchell 21, Mt Waverly 's John Duncan defeated Pacific Paradise's Col Slaughter 31-21, Woolgoolga's Ken Briggs 31 beat Caloundra's Des Dosser 22.

1994

Don Sandercock brought up a hat-trick of Suncorp Mixed Fours titles with success in yesterday’s Winter Carnival final at Maroochydore Beach, to add to 1992/93 crowns.
Sandercock, his sister Claire Paterson from Toowoomba, Dell Sandercock and Lou Breen, (Bribie Island) hit their straps in the final racing to a 11-1 lead after just six ends.
A lapse in concentration allowed the Kingaroy challengers Gordon Schultz, Menice Murray, Doris and Henry Newton to get back into the game at 11-9 but then the Sandercock team work clicked again.
On the fourteenth end Sandercock drew two shots for 20-9 lead then lead Dell Sandercock drew an opening toucher on the next end. Doris Newton replied with a magnificent bowl but Breen chipped in with a deft trail of the Jack for two.
The following end saw Newton, who had a wonderful tournament, draw another toucher but this time Paterson was in the act drawing through the toucher. At three down Schutlz played a run-sit shot for a single and the Kingaroy group won the next two ends to be 22-12 down.
The next two ends went to the Suncorp champions as they picked up two threes to close the match at 28-12.
The event proved a lucky break for Lou Breen who was a replacement for the replacement. Originally Stan Coomber was called in to replace last year’s team member Bob Peachey but Coomber underwent recent surgery so Breen was brought into the team with obvious success.
Sandercock had a close 18-17 struggle against Stawell’s Bill Holmes with never more than three shots separating the teams. Holmes and his wife Laurel Holmes and the Port Macquarie duo of Mavis and Phil Travers held a 9-6 lead after nine ends before Sandercock grabbed 3-2 to lead 11-9 but Holmes came back with a four, and the teams traded end for end to the penultimate end where the scores were level 17-17.
On the last end Breen drew two bowls to the jack to give Sandercock three shots - Holmes cut the score back to one but could not move the last bowl in what was a real championship match.
Today’s play see the attention swing to the opening rounds of the Suncorp Mixed pairs with last year’s winners Norma Massey and John Wolfinden rolling off at Mooloolaba. Ray and Helen Manning, the 1984 title winners are also at Mooloolaba, as is Joe Brunato who is paired with Iole Brunato.
Play begins at 9am at all Sunshine Coast clubs.

Top Sunshine Coast bowlers Keith Poole and Don Sandercock led their teams into today’s second round of the Maroochydore Beach Fourex Queen’s Birthday Four’s after a string of four wins at the Beach Bowls Club yesterday.
A total of 12 teams, from a starting field of 43, led by State and Australian representatives will now contest two qualifying games today for a place in Friday's final play-offs,
Carnival spokesman Peter Moles said the competition was fierce and everything could change after today’s matches.
The teams are competing for a Division 1 prize of $3600, a Division 2 prize of $1000, and a $500 Division 3 prize.
Yesterday’s surviving teams were: NSW State skip Heb Fishlock with a score of 4 + 32; Victoria’s Joe Johnson 4 + 7; Caloundra’s Keith Poole 4 + 45; New Zealand’s Ian Kostonich 4 + 17; Gold Coast State Fours winner Greg Halpin 4 + 24; Tasmania’s Peter Lawson 4 + 16; Sunshine Coast’s Don Sandercock 4 + 15; Gold Coast’s Artie Booth 4 + 21; Victoria’s Greg Wilson 4 + 7; Hervey Bay’s Max Fish 4 + 24; Sydney’s Garney Dredge 4 + 22; and Bribie Island's Allan Semgreen 4 + 16

1984 runner-up Don Sandercock controlled the final of the Clive Bonney Singles tournament at Maroochydore Beach yesterday to shut out his highly-rated opponent Allan McMahon.
Sandercock, who was beaten by Marcoola's Matt Savamaki last year, won the final against McMahon of Sandgate 31-25 after leading 9-1 on the fifth end.
He was still leading at the 24th end - 25-14 - but had to hold off a fightback by McMahon which saw him creep to 27-23 by the 28th.
However, Sandercock had no intention of loosening his grip on the title and led 28-25 on the 30th before scoring three on the 31st to win the match.
McMahon, a previous winner, showed his ability in a brilliant semi-final clash with Savamaki.
Savamaki led early, but by the 20th end the semi-final was tied at 16-all. At the 25th Savamaki held a slender 19-18 lead and the pair were locked at 24-all at the 30th.
The scores remained tight until McMahon finally grabbed a two shot break to win 31-29.

MAROOCHYDORE Swan bowler Don Sandercock on Saturday took out his club’s pairs final to complete the last leg of his championship grand slam.
Sandercock, 51, partnered by Pat Beswick, beat Barry Kleinhaus and Bob Mackay 22-16 in a tough final.
The victory rounded off a good year for Sandercock, who won the Swan singles, triples and fours championships, and the Maroochy Carnival.
But the champion and his partner did not have it all their own way.
At 16-all after the 18th end, the match was poised to go either way, but the experience of Sandercock and Beswick showed when they took two shots on each of the remaining three ends to smash the deadlock.
“That’s usually the way in top bowls competition,” Sandercock said. “Whoever takes the third last end usually runs out the winner.” He said he was elated at his grand slam success.
“There wasn’t much in the game," he said. “It was a close final.”
Sandercock and Beswick teamed up in 1979 to win the club's pairs championship and believe their knowledge of each other’s playing style contributed to their win.

MAROOCHYDORE Swan bowlers took out the Sellars Perpetual Shield with an unbeaten record in the Pacific Paradise Bowls Gala at the weekend. The team of Don Sandercock, Pat Beswick, Jack Alderson, Ray Pobar and substitute Nev Linde went through without dropping a game in the five-round competition. They finished with an aggregate of +49. Runners-up were the Pacific Paradise team of Matt Savimaki with four wins and a +33 aggregate.

BROTHERS Gerald Sandercock, of Dalby, and Don Sandercock, of Oakey, got up in a whirlwind finish to take their section in Newmarket's invitation masters pairs bowls competition yesterday.
The brothers, in a shaky start, lost the first game to Elwyn Harnell and Eric Hutton 13-15. In the next round they recovered some lost ground to beat former State champion Percy Bassett and Alan McMahon 15-11.
The Sandercock’s "killed" Doug Brown and Len Leinster 25-4 in the third game to take the section. Brown and Leinster appeared to have she section in safe keeping after beating Harnell and Hutton 23-8 and Bassett and McMahon 13-10.
Other section winners yesterday were:- Frank Vowles - Bill Nolan; Roy Smith - Jack Menzies; Graham and Aub Stanton; Tom Harmer; Arch Menzies: Bill Sinton - Bob Glasson: Norm Woodrow - Laurie Hall; Trixie Mattiazzi - Heck Hodggen: Frank Hegarty - Lou Murray; Alan But1er - Ernie Page: Stan Booth - Eric Miles.
Former State and Metropolitan champion Lou Murray, after a serious illness, combined with Hegarty to beat skips Les Gilbert 18-9, Fred O'Neill 16-11, and Peter Musso 13-10.
Among ton players competing today will be Tom Harvey (South Africa), Les Shean, Bob Purcell, Albert Newton (formerly of N.S.W.). State players Stan Coomber, Ted Blacker, Alan Schulte, Lance Wood, Errol Stewart, Bob Baird, Ernie Silverton and Cyril Hornick.

The Territory’s chances in the Masters bowls tournament being played in Darwin rest with Arafura's Allen Masters and RAAF’s Tim Tyler.
They are the only locals to reach the quarter finals of the singles competition after yesterday’s tense second and third round battles.
The others are Queenslander’s Don Sandercock and Ken Greenman, New South Welshmen Ron Dennis and Bob Johnson and West Australians Chris Guelfi and Don Evans.
Greenman and Guelfi were last year's finalists.
Most critics believe Guelfi, Dennis and Sandercock are the men to beat with some chance given to Masters.
Masters will play reigning champion Guelfi in his quarter-final match.
Tyler will clash with the in-form Dennis, Sandercock meets Evans and Greenman faces Johnson.
Shock
Local star Evan Morse was eliminated when beaten 31-21 by Cec Van Der Velde in a second-round shock.
Peter Petrides and Allan MacDonald reached the quarter finals of the pairs competition when they beat Mick Martinovich and Chris Pratt 24-19.
Matches continued today at the Darwin Bowls Club.

The Dalby Bowling Club's pairs competition was completed on Sunday.
In the morning, J. J. McGahan and D. B. Sandercock accounted for R. Brinkley and T. E. Head, 21-20, and after lunch beat A. B. Carvosso and G. Holman, 33-14.
In the semi-final, Head led 6-0 after three ends 11-8 at the ninth was
down 11-16 at the 13th. They were on terms with 18 at the 18th. Head scored two and lost by a one and two.
Sandercock lost seven ends against Holman, They were 4-4 after two ends. Sandercock made it 10-4 at the sixth, and 24-7 at the 8th.

1969

Hobart - Victoria retained the ABC Shield for interstate bowls teams matches when they beat New South Wales yesterday by 18 shots at the Buckingham Club.
The state first won the shield in 1967. Their only defeat was by runner-up Western Australia.
Twenty-five skips were in action during the series but N.S.W. champion Frank Soars was the only one to win all five games. He had a credit balance of 42 shots.
Stan Coomber (Qld) led brilliantly against Tommy Eastall (Tas) and Queensland skip Dave (Don sic) Sandercock capitalised on this to win by seven shots.
The Queensland clean sweep was a late reward for their consistency as they had lost their earlier games by margins of only seven, six, eight and three.

The finals of the Centenary bowls competitions were played at the Dalby Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon.
This brought the week-long competitions, which comprised mixed rinks, rinks, pairs and singles, to a close.
The singles were won by D. B. Sandercock, who played well throughout. He won from T. E. Head with a margin of 31-25.
The pairs went to S. Thorn and S. E. Keys, who won their semi-final 33-6 against T. Rixon and W. Marsh, of Peranga, and the final by 26-19 against R. Crank and R. Buckley, of Oakey.
In the finals of the rinks, R.J. Brandt's rink defeated a rink of Derrick by 25-21 to take out the trophy.

Don Sandercock successfully defended his Suncorp Mixed Fours title but only after surviving two extra ends in both the semifinal and final of yesterday’s play in the 1993 Suncorp Sunshine Coast Winter Carnival.
Sandercock and his sister Claire Paterson, Dell Sandercock and Bob Peachey were locked 22-22 after 21 ends of the final against Reg Harch.
Harch’s team of Mavis Harch, Marilyn and Ted Field held the advantage on the extra end with Peachey played the shot of the day to take out Harch’s bowl and this enabled Sandercock to snatch the last minute win.
The final watched by a crowd of over 500 spectators saw Sandercock off to a 7-0 start but then a six to Harch on the sixth end reduced the lead to 10-9. Sandercock followed with four ends on the trot to lead 19-10 but the Buderim four slowly climbed back into the match to be square on the usual last end.
The Sandercock-Norrish final was also a cliffhanger with an extra end required to determine the winner. Norrish went into the last end needing two shots for a draw but things looked grim as the course to the jack was impeded by short bowls. Then Melbourne changed hands to trail jack for one shot and Norrish drew the second shot with his last bowl.
On the extra end, Sandercock held shot and chose to position his first howl at the back of the head among three opposition bowls. Norrish then trailed the jack with his last bowl but the jack lodged next to the Sandercock positioned bowl giving the defending champions the match 18-17.
Buderim’s Reg Harch triumphed against Bryan Campi’s team of Jan Russo, Mary and Trevor Hingston 24-11 in a game perhaps won on one end. Campi had fought back from 1-8 down to be in the game at 6-10 but the Buderim skip played a telling shot to trail the jack for six shots for 16-6 and then won the next three ends.
The Suncorp Mixed Pairs begin today with games scheduled at all Sunshine Coast clubs. Last year’s winners Viv and Joyce Jacobs will not be defending the title but finalist, and a mixed pairs winner almost 20 years ago, Menice Murray and Gordon Schultz (Kingaroy) will be lining up at Mooloolaba - but not until Wednesday morning.
However a first round clash today at Mooloolaba could be a highlight of the day with Norma Massey and John Wolfinden pitted against Victorians Alison and John Duncan. Col and Shirley Bell and New Zealand’s T and D Hill complete this tough section.
