Sources for person: Dear Colin - I've just come across your family history site, because of the inclusion of Esther Rashleigh nee Little. I am descended from Esther's sister, Anne, who married Thomas Gibson and settled at Goondiwindi.

We have not got very far, to date, in following up Anne and Esther's ancestors. From her death certificate (and those of her sisters) her mother's name was Anne Hunter, born in Newcastle. I'd be very interested to know any further information you've been able to unearth on the ancestry of Anne Hunter (and on any of Esther's other relatives - other than that her two sisters both came to Australia and her youngest brother died in childhood, I know very little about her siblings other than what is in Census records and postal/business directories). I am happy to exchange what information I have.

When I started tracing the family history some time ago I corresponded with several of the Rashleigh descendents in Qld but we lost touch over the years.

In the 1861 UK census, she is listed as living in Bristol with the Hunter family (along with her sister Mary). William Hunt is 30, with his wife Mary 44. They have 4 young (under 7) children. He is listed as a labourer at wholesale grocers. Assuming he has a very low income from his profession, it is unlikely he can afford 2 live in domestic servants. I am wondering if, in fact, they are staying with relatives in Bristol whilst on their (Mary and Esther Little) to Plymouth to emigrate to Australia.
what leads me to this conclusion is:
The Little sisters are from Newcastle, in the north-east of England.
Their mother’s maiden name is listed as ‘Hunter’, and they are staying in Bristyol with a family called ‘Hunt’ - perhaps 1 or other is listed with the incorrect family name, and they are related to the fsamily they are staying with through their mother.
They are staying in Bristol, in the south-west of England, a significant distance from Newcastle.
A few months later both sisters leave for Australia from Plymouth, and Bristol would be a logical stop on the way to Plymouth from Newcastle.

Sources for person: Hi, and thanks for getting in touch!

I am not researching the Rasleighs as such. My interest is in Jessie Margaret Mary Monica Moreland (my cousin twice removed) who married Lawrence Lynagh, and their descendants.

I think Marie Elaine Lynagh must be a different woman (maybe a cousin) to the person you know, as a couple of people told me have given me details of Marie Elaine Shearer (nee Lynagh)'s death and one of those people was her son Alisdair Shearer (who would surely know!).

I attach a tree and a report on what I know of this family (from Rashleigh down). I hope it might fill in some gaps to you. I would be very interested to know anything about Jessie Margaret Mary Monica Moreland and her Lynagh descendants.

If the Hunt family coukd afford 2 domestic servants (unlikely), it would make more sense to have them fro the Bristol area, rather than from Newcastle, a massive distance away.
A few months later both sisters leave for Australia from Plymouth, and Bristol would be a logical stop on the way to Plymouth from Newcastle.
