Lockleys and Silverhock broke away from a false start and galloped fully half a mile before they were pulled up. Lockleys led the first time past the post, Gazelle being second, Vanity fourth, and the gray last. At the rise Lockleys ran off into the scrub, considerably bruising his rider by colliding with some bushes. Vanity then took the lead and the issue was never afterwards in doubt, Fiddler under the whip getting the better of Norchy for second place. HARTLEY VALE. - On Thursday Messrs Homburg and Stirling, members for Gumeracha, with Messrs Sandercock, Teakle, and Johnson, waited on the Minister of Education, and requested that a public school be established at Hartley Vale. The nearest schools were Gumeracha, 3 miles distant, and Lobethal, nearly 4 miles. The younger children could not travel the distance. There was a suitable building, and if a school were opened about forty children would attend. Mr Johnson replied that he would enquire into the case and see what could be done. [8/12/1888 29c.] ADELAIDE HUNT CLUB. (By Rover.) The annual fixture at Gumeracha is always a popular one, but this year it was later than usual, and the majority of members had turned their horses out for the summer spell, consequently only a few left Adelaide at the appointed time. Our road was via Houghton, as Mr A.E. Ross had very kindly asked us to take lunch with him at Highercombe, where we arrived at 12 o'clock, and after doing full justice to the good things provided made a start at 1 o'clock for Gumeracha, which we reached about 2.30 p.m. Here we found a large contingent of the keen sports of the district assembled to welcome us. At 3 o'clock the Master took the pack in hand, and led up the road to the reserve, where on looking round I noticed the following regular riders:- The Master (Mr Allan Baker) on Kildare, Messrs A. Miller on Sportsman, A.J. Boase on Boomerang, A.J. Barker on Cardinal, F.H. Downer on Kingfish, A. Thomson on Blackboy, A.E. Ross on Dudu, A.E. Braund on Victor, and C. Sherard on Cheater; while the local division were ably represented by Messrs W. Formby on Sir John, W. Jenkins on Kilrush, F. Kingston on Lady Grey, G. Stott on Harkaway, McLean on Comrade, and Philp on a bay. The first three or four fences were really good post-and-rails, which the whole field jumped splendidly, and we were soon going over the hills at a racing pace. Wheeling to our left we crossed the main road, and then over a fence at the back of the township, where Dudu gave Mr Ross an ugly fall, but at the finish we were glad to learn that no bones were broken, a bad shaking being the extent of the injury. From here to the check, which took place in Mr Moore's paddock, the jumps were varied and thick, but all the horses were fencing faultlessly. During the breather of ten minutes I noticed all the original field was there, and when the Master again laid the hounds on it looked as if the run back to Gumeracha would be very merry, which indeed it was, as old Kildare, being on his very best behaviour, fairly reveled in climbing the hills, and when we again reached Gumeracha at 4.45 p.m. I think, although the horses were going very strong, they were not sorry to stop. All the local sportsmen worked very hard to make the meet a success, but a special word of praise is due to Mr W. Formby, who always goes to considerable trouble in picking out the runs. The club is also indebted to the following landowners, who cheerfully gave us permission to cross their property:ñ Captain Randell, Mrs Randell, Messrs Norsworthy, Gregory, Hannaford, Johnstone, Sandercock, Moore, Teakle, Lee, Kitto, Colman, Cornish, and Stott, and Mrs Scheck. In the evening we sat down to an excellent dinner provided for by about twenty of the local sportsmen. After punishing this very severely and honouring several toasts a pleasant social was spent, and we were quite sorry at 10 o'clock to bid our guests goodbye and start back for Adelaide, feeling sure that no trouble had been spared to make us enjoy the outing. J. ANDERSON A win at Dalby just over a fortnight ago paved the way to a successful betting coup on Royal Fare in yesterday's Gallipoli Welter at Eagle Farm. Royal Fare, backed for big money from 7's to 5's, led all the way to win from fast-finishing. Wedborough, with favourite, Renard River, third. Connections of Royal Fare ran the gelding at Dalby to prove his Weetwood Handicap form at Toowoomba on March 13 was all wrong. Royal Fare finished second last in the Weetwood, but never put a foot wrong at Dalby. He won in a canter. Stable commissioners and Downs followers declared the Gallipoli Welter a one horse race, and threw in for a mammoth win on Royal Fare. 'Six furlongs' is just his 'dish.' He doesn't want to go any further,' trainer Gordon Cherry said after the win. Three records Jockey 'Skeeter' Sanders said Royal Fare was always going with a little extra in hand, and he was never worried over the last two furlongs. 'Although Renard River came at him at the top of the straight, I knew I only had to give him a flick with the whip and the number was already in the frame,' Sanders said. Royal Fare has the distinction of shattering three course records over six furlongs Inside 10 days. Last year Royal Fare slashed the Oakey Newmarket record on the Thursday, the Toowoomba time on the Saturday, and the Warwick Newmarket time on the following Saturday. Royal Fare's sprint double WARWICK (by teleprinter) - Oakey district bred gelding Royal Fare completed a Newmarket Handicap double when he won the Warwick Newmarket Handicap yesterday. Royal Fare recently won the Oakey Newmarket, beating promising Toowoomba galloper Sir Helion and Witty Nero. Yesterday he again beat Witty Nero, who started favourite, with Toowoomba horse Pre-Eminent, in the minor placing. But for his dislike for floats, Royal Fare might have raced in other interests. He was bred at Oakey by Mr. Tom Pattison, son-in-law of the present owner, Mr. L. Sandercock, a Jimbour wheat farmer. Shy of float It had been intended to offer Royal Fare at the Brisbane yearling sales, but all efforts to get him into a truck to send him to the sales proved unavailing, and the youngster stayed at home, instead of going to Brisbane. Subsequently Mr. Sandercock bought the youngster from his son-in-law for 80 guineas, and gave him to Bill McCormack, a young Oakey trainer, to prepare for racing. Following successes at Toowoomba and Laidley, Royal Fare was set for the Oakey Newmarket, which he won stylishly, if narrowly. Led all way Royal Fare never looked in danger of defeat yesterday. Education Kenton Valley School 12. ‎Dulcie "Sis" Sandercock‏‎ Born ‎5 Sep 1902 Kenton Valley, South Australia, Australia Died ‎9 Sep 1991‎, age 89 years Buried Centenial Park Cemetery, Cremated Occupation: Teacher Dulcie Norsworthy Dulcie Norsworthy Dulcie Norsworthy An Epidemic Primary schools were closed throughout South Australia for a number of weeks in 1937 following the outbreak of an epidemic of poliomyelitis. Margaret Miles, one of the girls in my class, became a victim of the disease and became afflicted a permanent limp. In 1938 the school again closed for a period because many students were ill with chicken pox but my sister Margaret and I continued our education uninterrupted. Our aunt Dulcie Norsworthy (nee Sandercock) taught cousin Janet and us at her small cottage in Murray Street. It is interesting to remember and compare stories about education that Auntie Dulcie told us of her school years. Aunt Dulcieís Schooldays Dulcie Norsworthy's father was a very severe disciplinarian. He was cruel to his youngest daughter who walked with a limp due to chronic pain in her hip. Her father ruled that she should walk correctly - he felt that his daughter was 'trying to be smart' by limping. Harsh discipline came to the fore. Before she started school she was made to walk along their front verandah with her father following behind her and striking her on the backs of her legs and buttocks with his riding crop to induce her to walk without limping. This was impossible for her to to achieve and was a painful exercise for her both physically and emotionally. John Sandercock's wife gave birth to 15 children; one died at a young age and the last was stillborn making Dulcie the youngest. (NOTE - This my be incorrect - Dulcie was the youngest daughter, but she had 2 younger brothers. Also, I can only find records for 14 children - none still born. It is possible there was a 15th child still born, given the time, and it may or may not have been recorded.) He liked to think himself to be an English aristocrat and built the large family home known as Nether Hill at Kenton Valley. It had a small room with its own fireplace, a cupboard, writing desk, a small table and chair, and a comfortable lounge chair. This he called his 'Study' and in it the gentleman took some of his meals in seclusion. Dulcie started school when she was seven years old because the three-kilometre walk to Kenton Valley Primary School was too hard for her at five years with her disability. One of her brothers carried her school bag and lunch. Her schoolteacher was a Mrs Stephens who traveled the three kilometres from Gumeracha in a four-wheel trap drawn by four horses. She gave rides to Cecil, Lynley and Norris Dohnt, Ella and Doris Norsworthy, and George Coleman and his two sisters. As soon as the vehicle arrived at the school, a boy took the bridle of one horse and move the pair sideways. Mrs Stephens was then able to use the small iron step to alight from the vehicle well clear of the iron tyre of the front wheel and thus prevent the skirt of her black dress from becoming soiled. The precautions appeared strange because her long flowing dress had a small train and much of the dress swept the ground and became soiled anyway. There were many times when the 'Senior' boys deftly placed a clod or two of dirt on top of the train to make sure it was not only soiled on the one side. The boys walked the horses to the back of the school, removed their harness and put them in a small yard for the day, with a feed of chaff. Mrs Stephens was a stern teacher who firmly believed in the saying 'Spare the rod and spoil the child.' Len Norsworthy attended the Kenton Valley School in those years. Along with other boys, he was administered the cane for any misdemeanour. Len was not blessed with the ability to shed tears when other boys did so. Mrs Stephens felt he needed to humble himself and cry in front of her; but though his skin many times showed red welts and bruising she was denied his tears. Dulcie's limp became more pronounced in grade 6 at age 13 years. One leg became 12cm shorter and the pain increased. Mrs Stephens, her teacher, became concerned at her plight and came to her assistance. Her husband was a doctor of medicine and together they arranged for a 12 cm steel extension with an oval base to be fitted to her lace-up boot. This made walking much easier for Dulcie and relieved the pain. The teacher's standard of education was high. Aware of Dulcie's ability to learn and achieve, and knowing the results of the Grade 7 School Examination, Mrs Stephens arranged for her 14-year-old student to attend Teachers College. Dulcie boarded during her teacher-training with her oldest sister Mona Pritchard's family which lived in Percy Street Prospect. This arrangement continued after her first appointment to Salisbury as a Junior Teacher in 1918. In 1919, at 17 years of age, she commenced as a primary school teacher at Marrabel where she boarded with a farming family. I was given a box of matches for any required lighting and headed for the comfort zone. I struck a match to find where everything was located; then the light went out. I struck another match, and found an old telephone directory hanging from a piece of wire behind the door and realised that it was the toilet paper. My goodness, I could get four sheets from one page. I inspected where the ‘doings’ went with another match, moving the same around under the seat to send the red-back spiders scurrying to their retreats and hung on too long until the flame burnt my fingers. I dropped the burning match down the man-(boys)-hole. There was a “Whoomph”, and all the dunny paper at the bottom was set alight, which sent a glow up through the seating area for a short time. It was really something to see and you could have read a book-or the old telephone directory-by its light. Before the wooden seat could catch alight the paper work “way down under” had burnt itself out and I was able to settle down to the business I had come for. When I told Auntie Dulcie Norsworthy this story, she told me she had had the same experience in the same toilet twenty years earlier. AND F. SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Gumeracha A.H. and F. Society was held in the Hall, with the President, Mr J.B. Randell in the chair. It was decided to have an additional section at the next show, namely one for children's pets. After lengthy discussions on membership fees, entrance fees, etc., it was decided to raise the admission fee to the show from 2/- to 3/- for adults. The Society has a credit balance of £301, including a £25 profit for the past year The Society had a very windy and dusty day for the last show with fire hazard very high and this accounted in no small degree for the comparatively small profit for the year. Hampton remarked that Wheaten and Oaten hay classes were both of good quality. A little extra care in selecting sheaves for exhibition could have influenced the results. Baled hay class had six entries. First prize bale contained too much Barley grass; second prize had insufficient clover. Two entries were mouldy. Again greater care needed in selecting entries. E. Filsell, of Forest Range said he was very pleased with the display and commended exhibitors "I would recommend in future that potatoes be washed as it tends to show defects." Prizewinners were: A.J. Symonds is at present travelling on the Strathmore to England for a fairly long visit, expecting to be away for about 8 months. Prior to his departure he was tendered a farewell by bowling club members and presented with a pipe. [1/4/1953 6b.] FUTURE OF GUMERACHA SHOW ASSURED. Minister Enthusiastic About Display. Hon. A.W. Christian, Minister of Agriculture, was most enthusiastic about the record display of produce at Gumeracha Show on Saturday. Mr Christian said "one would expect to see here the very best fruit and vegetables display in the State and the exhibition measures up to standard." Mr Christian was introduced and asked to open the Show by Mr C. Jamieson, Vice-President, who apologised for the absence of the President, Mr H.A. Hanna, due to ill health. Mr Jamieson said this year's Show provided one of the best displays yet seen at Gumeracha. The apple and pear exhibit was among the largest in the State. He particularly directed the attention of patrons to the British breeds sheep section which was introduced last year and had grown considerably at the Show. Before officially opening the Show, Mr Christian added to the remarks of Mr Jamieson "Despite the handicaps suffered by growers this year," he said, "some sections have been better supported than ever before." Quality was essential if Australia was to hold her markets, continued the Minister, and this applied to all phases of primary production. His Department was doing everything possible to assist in this direction and any new developments resulting from research were immediately passed on to the man on the land. Mr Christian paid high tribute to the ladies of the district for their fine display of arts and crafts. Mr W.L. Hanna proposed a vote of thanks to the Minister. The 22nd annual show of the Society was greatly improved in almost every respect. Financial membership of the Society (worth £140) would probably exceed that of the majority of country Shows in S.A. on a population basis. The perfect day on Saturday attracted a crowd which numbered between 1500 and 2000 people and accordingly gate takings (excluding members and their families) rose to £86. New Feature in District Exhibit. As usual the centre of attraction in the Hall display was the District Exhibit which was again prepared by the local Agricultural Bureau. Almost every item of primary produce and any other samples of district production were included in this non-competitive exhibit. Latest addition and one which was the subject of much comment was the peanut plant provided by Mr Ellis Sandercock. While on a recent visit to Queensland Mr Sandercock gathered a number of peanut plants and planted them on his farm at Gumeracha. Although the nuts had not quite reached maturity it was obvious that this plant will flourish in the district and could easily provide a useful sideline for district farmers in the future. Entries for the British breeds in the sheep section were increased by 30 this year, and included good support for the new classes of Polwarths. Although this was only the second occasion on which sheep have been shown at Gumeracha, it would appear that the section will become an important part of the Show in the future. Horses in action again provided an interesting and entertaining spectacle. Four classes mainly for local horses had been deleted from the programme, but entries were equal to last year. There were two mishaps during the afternoon, but fortunately nobody was seriously injured. Support for the dog section was better than last year, but still did not reach expectations. The Society has affiliated with the Canine Association and the judge, Mr H.V. Carn, suggested that the Society should apply to the Association to hold a Championship dog show at Gumeracha next year. The non-competitive display of schoolwork by children of district schools was very attractive and occupied quite a substantial area in the Hall. In this section the Society makes a donation of £2/2/- to the committee of each school participating. Arts and Crafts had more support than has been the case at other Shows held recently in Hills districts. There was particular support for photography classes whilst the picture from a calendar class drew nineteen very good standard entries. Cookery entries were three times greater than at last year's Show and the display was a credit to those responsible. Exhibits were neatly arranged on trestle tables and covered with cellophane which was appreciated by both patrons and exhibitors alike. Mrs Y. Michalk, who won the cookery trophy in the last two shows and was attempting to win the trophy outright this year, was unlucky to be defeated narrowly on this occasion. A remarkable feature about Gumeracha Show is that prize money is always available on the day of the Show. On Saturday it was ready for payment at 3.30 due in no small measure to the efforts of Mr and Mrs D.M. Standen, who voluntarily assist in this direction each year. Mr Standen is an ex-secretary of the Society. Incidentally, the present secretary, Mr E.C. Jamieson, who does an extraordinarily good job, is also an honorary secretary. When nominations for the District Councils in the Hills area closed on Friday, Returning Officers announced that only four of the twenty-five vacancies which had occurred in the six District Councils would be contested at the annual elections on July 7. …..
