Isabelle was the sixth of twelve children to William Alfred `Alfie` Conway and Cora Louise Moffitt. She grew up on a dairy farm at Clontarf, and she told many tales of the antics the children of the large families had, climbing the rabbit fences on their way to and from school. Being the middle child we have been led to believe that she was a bit of a tomboy. Having two brothers older and three younger than she was, she was always trying to keep up with them running, climbing and riding the horses. At fourteen, Isabelle worked on farms in the Clifton, Greenmount and West Haldon areas caring for children and baking bread. In 1931, Isabelle moved to Dalby to work in the house of Mrs Fields of Fields Shoe Store. She later worked at the Windsor Hotel where she was Head Waitress earning one pound a week. On the 8th September 1934, Isabelle married William `Bill` James Rashleigh. They had a family of seven children - six daughters and one son. She was widowed on 21st August 1967. Isabelle worked at St Columba`s Convent for twenty years. She then worked casually at many of the hotels in Dalby including the Commercial Hotel for Mary Barry. Isabelle loved and did beautiful crochet and knitting and she enjoyed working at the Life Line store. She played a crafty good game of cards and many a Saturday you would find `Bella` and Sister Ann visiting `Karingal` to share a chat, some sweets and sometimes a beer with her old mates. She was quick to respond to visits to her family. She is survived by five daughters, nineteen grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren. Isabelle was a fun person - a lady who gave all she had to give of herself. We her family loved her with her strong will and independence and today we know those pearly gates were wide open, and she sits there AN ANGEL IN WHITE. 7.
Norman Thomas ConwayBorn 19 Aug 1918 Died 27 May 2000 Dalby, Queensland, Australia, age 81 years Buried 1 Jun 2000 Dalby, Queensland, Australia Dalby Cemetery Norm Conway and Dell Sandercock Norm Conway and Dell Sandercock Norm with his niece, Dell Sandercock, at his sister Isabella’s 80th birthday party. The following poem was written about Norm by his brother Leo (Leolin), and Norm kept a copy as he quite enjoyed his brother’s poetry, especially this one about himself. It should be taken in the manner that it was intended - a light-hearted look at Norm, and not as a slur on his character. COULD YOU CALL HIM MATE ? Have you heard of Normie Conway His only claim to fame He once outsold the wheat board In his zest for selling grain He's older now, a wiser man Quite past his better days Still handles the bottle well Still tells lies of yesterday. Your JJ richardson I've met and your Bluey Smith Good cobbers of yours I'll bet Good company to be with Remember that straight road of yours That led us to their gate Turned out to be the long way round Like a highway figure eight. You said that you were sober Used that as your excuse You said your life was over If I didn't stop for juice I looked at the petrol gauge Your shakes were so severe Then you flew into this rage Not petrol, BLOODY BEER. Norm has the shakes again today Waiting for the pension When he gets it he'll make hay No use giving work a mention He'll abscond to any bar His rageing thirst to fill Sober he'll sink a crowbar Trying to hold it still. When his flush Norm drinks on As though there's no tomorrow Doesn't care if he's frowned upon No cares about the horrors I'll vouch for him a decent cove Don't take this verse the wrong way For her’es one whose had to rove This Norman Tartars Conway. 8.
