I thought I'd sent this message last night but can't find it in my 'sent items' folder so will resend in case.
Just writing to thank you for your Sandercock Family website as it's helped fill in a big gap in my family history on my grandmother's side. I am distantly connected to you through your aunt, Claire Sandercock, who married one of my Paterson relatives. Thomas Skene Paterson was descended from James Paterson; my branch of the family is descended from his brother William.

Some of my relatives have traced our line back to William and his father Alexander but until I saw your site I wasn't aware that William's brother James had also emigrated from Scotland to the Toowoomba district. Nobody in my family knows much about the Patersons at all, probably because my grandmother's father, John Paton Paterson left his three young children in the care of his sister Elizabeth Moir Paterson to raise after his wife died. Elizabeth sent them to boarding school in Brisbane and they spent their holidays with her at Hides Hotel (Cairns) which she owned and ran, so they probably didn't see much of their Toowoomba Paterson relatives. John Paton virtually disappeared after his wife's death. We know he visited his children a few times and that he lived at Hall's Creek for a long time. We also have some war records - his horse was shot from under him at one stage. Rumour is that he had an alcohol problem and that he didn't think much of western civilisation, preferring to live with the Aborigines at Halls Creek - maybe there are lots of Aboriginal Paterson relatives we don't know about!. One of my relatives recently tracked down his death certificate. He died at Sunset, a hospital at Nedlands, north of Perth on 20 Jan 1951, aged 75 and is buried in the Prebyterian Cemetery, Karrakatta, W.A.

I'd love to know more about John Paton's early life and about his Paterson relatives. Is it possible for me to contact Noelinda Lawlor whose email you quote as your main source for the Paterson information on your site?

If you and/or Noelinda would like to know more about John Paton's descendants, please email me or you could look at the 'Hinckfuss' family tree my sister has put on Ancestry.com.

Do you know if there are any Patersons still living in the Toowoomba area? I live in Kingaroy, only an hour and a half hour's drive away, so could easily contact them if any are interested in the family history.

Last time I was in Toowoomba I tried to find William's grave and couldn't, but found the graves of James and his wife Margaret Skene, and next to that the grave of their son David Skene. The inscriptions read:

'Sacred to the memory of JAMES PATERSON, native of Aberdeen, Scotland. Beloved husband of MARGARET SKENE. Died Sept 22 1905, aged 73 years. Blessed are the dead which die in the lord. Also his wife MARGARET SKENE PATERSON native of Aberdeen, Scotland, died June 16, 1923 in her 83rd year.'

'In Sacred Memory of my beloved husband and our father DAVID SKENE PATERSON, died 29th Nov. 1928, aged 58 years. Be still and know that I am God'

I have a couple of photos of the graves and inscriptions I could email if anyone's interested.

Once again, thanks for all your great info.

Regards
